Let’s head off to the spectacular Sorrento Peninsula & Amalfi Coast where the cliffs dive into turquoise seas with crystal clear waves. This is where Ulysses is said to have tempted the famous Mermaids and where we will explore the awesome landscape of hidden coves and breath-taking views. This is where we will not only take in the rugged green hills for our walks but also enjoy the art, culture monuments, churches, café and cuisine of the Sorrento Peninsula. We will be staying in Massa Lubrense which is the greenest of the six towns on the Sorrento coast. A place where Mediterranean vegetation lines the winding footpaths through ancient hamlets that lead on through lemon orchards and olive, chestnut and oak groves.

Location & Itinerary
Impressive Walking:
The walks will as always try to capture the very best of this stupendous walking area between Sorrento and Amalfi. With an ancient pathway known as the ‘path of the gods’ we’ll be in fine company and pay homage to the likes of Goethe and Byron who also found this area encaptivating for their Grand Tours of the 18th Century. Today it’s no less enchanting and I’m sure the paths are even better! We’ve designed the walks so that each of them gains the very best of the area reaching out to Positano which is perched precariously on the side of the cliff in the Lammari mountains. Narrowly stepped alleys wend their way between pastel-coloured houses and picturesque shops. Another day we intend to head to the Isle of Capri to enjoy its enchanting environs. On other days we’ll enjoy the area closer to the hotel and make our way via delightful paths and tracks along to the end of the peninsula itself. What ever we choose the Sorrento and Amalfi coastlines are home to incredibly rich and varied flora and fauna including rare ferns, swooping peregrine falcons and the shy but endemic spectacled salamander.
Each day there will be a minimum of two walks. A moderate one of 8 miles 1,500ft and harder one around 10 miles or possibly more and often double or more of that ascent (some walks require a good head for heights). Generally when in Europe some of the routes may use chairlifts, gondolas, cable cars plus public and private coaches. On this trip we may decide to use private coaches to the start of the walks and where possible public buses back, when we have had enough? We will also probably catch a ferry to Capri plus a funicular maybe used too on one of the walks?

We will experience a wonderful and unique stay at the Hotel Delle Palme **** which is situated in a strategic position on the spectacular ridge of the Sorrento Peninsula. It enjoys breathtaking, panoramic vistas towards, on one hand to the Gulf of Naples and the other the Gulf of Salerno. Due to its elevated location at around 1,300ft above sea level it enjoys a mild and fresh climate. Its pool is set in large gardens and the hotel is well within walking distance to explore the village centre. The hotel itself is elegantly furnished as are the rooms which are equipped with televisions, air-conditioning, hair dryers and mini bars! Wifi is complimentary.
Please note - most rooms for single occupancy are double/twins, however there are couple of 'proper' single rooms (single bed and smaller room size) which have a lower supplement.

Passport validity
For UK passport holders your passport must be:
- Issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
- valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)
- You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.
Travel Insurance
Please ensure that you have adequate personal travel insurance to suit your requirements in place before you travel. You should get the bracket of insurance between 2,500-2,999m (or 9,840ft) i.e. up to but not including 3,000m
EU Entry/Exit System (EES)
The new Entry/Exit System (EES) will start operations on 12 October 2025. The Entry/Exit System (EES) will be deployed gradually across the external borders of the 29 European countries over a period of 6 months. These European countries will introduce the different elements of the EES in phases, including the collection of biometric data, such as facial image and fingerprints. This means that travellers’ biometric data (facial image and fingerprints) might not be collected at every border crossing point right away, and their personal information may not be registered in the system. Passports will continue to be stamped as usual.
This progressive implementation will last until 9 April 2026. From 10 April 2026, the EES will be fully operational at all external border crossing points of the European countries using the system.

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System)
Starting in end 2026 UK citizens are required to have a travel authorisation to enter 30 European countries for a short stay. ETIAS travel authorisation is linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new ETIAS travel authorisation.
With a valid ETIAS travel authorisation, you can enter the territory of these European countries as often as you want for short-term stays - normally for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. However, it does not guarantee entry. When you arrive, a border guard will ask to see your passport and other documents and verify that you meet the entry conditions.
NB - There is no official date for the ETIAS currently confirmed but when it is introduced it will be your responsibility to ensure that you have arranged this. We will update everyone when the ETIAS is required with information on how to apply for this online.
A UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) gives you the right to access state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in the European Union (EU).
UK-issued European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) are still valid and offer the same cover as GHICs in the EU.
Once your EHIC has expired, you’ll be able to replace it with a GHIC.
NB – A GHIC/EHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance!

Host & Everything Else
October is a great time to visit Amalfi, offering mild weather with daytime temperatures averaging 18–24°C, fewer crowds, and a chance for a final swim. However, visitors should expect occasional rain showers and cooler evenings, so packing layers and an umbrella or raincoat is recommended.
You need to have many of the same things with you, as you would have for a typical British spring day on the mountains. The following list is a suggestion of what you may wish to bring with you
You MUST have:
- Walking boots
- A Water bottle (minimum 1 litre, 2litre is much better)
- A Rucksack with a plastic liner
- Waterproofs: jacket and trousers
- A Warm hat
- Warm gloves (not leather)
- Thick walking socks
- Base layer: (thin thermal or warm T-shirt. Best not to be cotton as it gets cold when wet)
- Over layer: (warm sweater or fleece)
- Extra layer: warm top for when cold (e.g. when stopped for lunch)
- Comfortable walking trousers (not jeans as they are too cold & heavy when wet)
- Personal Medication
- A torch for use in the tunnels
- Smart casual clothes for the evening.
- T shirts
- Shorts
- Swim wear
- Sun tan lotion
- Sun glasses
You may wish to bring:
- Vacuum flask (if you like hot drinks on the hill)
- Medium size Tupperware container or plastic bag, to put picnic lunch in.
- Sit mat
- Lip salve
- Camera
