Lapland Adventure and Northern Lights
An incredible journey to a winter wonderland!
Finland in winter is a magical experience. A scenic winter wonderland located deep inside the Arctic Circle. Blanketed in snow from December to April, reindeer far outnumber people here, and snow-laden trees form bizarre sculptures in a vast and silent landscape. At night the mesmerising Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) can shimmer in the moonlight (not guaranteed – unfortunately not even Spice can do that!). By day there are exhilarating reindeer, husky and snowmobile safaris. This will be the 8th consecutive year we have visited this magical place and it just seems to get better and better!
For some visitors the months of December and January are the most evocative, when the blue twilight of 'Kaamos' envelops the arctic landscape and days pass in a palette of rose-coloured dawns and dusks. Days in the Arctic Circle are shortest from early December to mid-January.

Location & Itinerary
On this trip as well as our included activities and the must have snowball fights and walks, if you fancy something a little bit different from the usual ski resorts, why not try skiing in Finland (Lapland) for truly inspirational landscapes. Many people enjoy skiing in Finland because it is completely unspoiled, remaining a firm favourite with skiers who like to get away from it all. Intermediate and Advanced skiers may find the resort a little restrictive in what it offers!
Finland's crisp, dry type of cold is quite comfortable in protective winter clothing. Warm thermal suits and boots are available to pre-book plus to make your stay most comfortable it is advisable to bring long thermal underwear, warm socks and boots; several light layers of under garments; Ski goggles or sunglasses; Hats and gloves.
In the midst of an unspoilt Arctic wonderland lies our exotic Lappish resort of Levi. Renowned as one of Finland’s best and most extensive ski areas, it offers uncrowded snow-sure skiing from November to May with high standards of accommodation and a warm friendly atmosphere ideal for an all-round winter holiday.

Passport validity
For UK passport holders your passport must be:
- Issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
- valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)
You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System)
The rules of travel to most European countries have changed. Starting in the first half of 2025 UK citizens are required to have a travel authorisation to enter 30 European countries for a short stay.
ETIAS travel authorisation is an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to a number of European countries. It is linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new ETIAS travel authorisation.
With a valid ETIAS travel authorisation, you can enter the territory of these European countries as often as you want for short-term stays - normally for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. However, it does not guarantee entry. When you arrive, a border guard will ask to see your passport (and other documents if required) and verify that you meet the entry conditions.
NB - There is no official date for the ETIAS currently confirmed but when it is introduced it will be your responsibility to ensure that you have arranged this. We will update everyone when the ETIAS is required with information on how to apply for this online.
Travel Insurance
Please ensure that you have adequate personal travel insurance to suit your requirements in place before you travel. Spice Escapes have arranged a scheme with Staysure who are fully authorised and regulated by the FCA (firm reference number 663617) full details of which can be found on the FCA website www.fca.org.uk. A UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) gives you the right to access state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in the European Union (EU).
UK-issued European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) are still valid and offer the same cover as GHICs in the EU.
Once your EHIC has expired, you’ll be able to replace it with a GHIC.
NB – A GHIC/EHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance!

Host & Everything Else

DRIVER’S LICENSE
Don’t forget to take your driver’s license - you will need this if you want to drive one of the skidoos on your included excursion
ADDITIONAL USEFUL THOUGHTS
Here are a few additional thoughts that have been suggested by members/your coordinator -
- Extra money for the trip extras – these can add up so bring plenty
- The currency is Euros and a normal 2 pin plug adaptor (the same as in most of Europe)
- Torch (head torch might be preferable)
- Cold temperatures tend to drain phone batteries so it may be a good idea to bring a portable phone charger to top up your phone
- If you want to dry, straighten, curl hair, etc is it best to bring your own equipment!
- A small day sack may be a good idea but it would need to fit over your thermal suit
- You may want to bring swimwear as there is a sauna / spa at the hotel
CLOTHING
You will be pleased to know that there is no specialist equipment needed, however you should consider –
- Hat
- Balaclava/neck warmer – not essential but some members have said that your face can get quite cold so something to protect it is useful
- Gloves – the snow is quite dry (so different to the UK) and waterproof gloves may not be necessary however it has been suggested that a set of glove liners/thinner gloves is a useful addition
- Layers – the best advice is to use layers when dressing that way you can add to or take off easily.
- Thermals – not vital but you may find them useful
- Thick socks - in addition to normal socks a pair of thick socks is can always be a welcome addition to your kit
- If you have booked a thermal suit and/or boot you will be prepared for practically everything
- When you enter some buildings you may be asked to take off your boots at the entrance – so to avoid getting wet socks you may want to consider taking a pair of flip flops to put in your day sack that you can slip on (better those with a bar across the foot rather than between the toes though) or just a change of socks.
- Evening wear – it is very casual and there is no need to dress up for dinner, etc
- Heated gel packs – not a clothing item but some of these might be welcome if your fingers get cold
