Stunning Stockholm
Stunning Stockholm is a Scandinavian delight
Stockholm, the largest city in Scandinavia and Sweden's Capital, blends a long history and stunning nature with the cultural sophistication and modern architecture, and by adding water there is an extra layer of charm.
Built on 14 islands, connected by 57 bridges over Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea, Stockholm could be Venice’s sleek and chic Scandinavian cousin. More than just a picturesque city, Stockholm prides itself on being an advocate of tolerance and inclusivity. Overflowing with beauty it is packed with places where you can shop, eat and dance until you drop, or simply pause and watch the world go by. Why visit Stockholm? Simply put, it has it all, and then some!

Sweden’s stunning capital is full with beautiful buildings. Starting with Gamla Stan, the lovely Old Town is home to some of Stockholm’s most impressive buildings including the Royal Palace, Nobel Museum, the Opera House and historic Storkyrkan cathedral. Storgorget, the city’s oldest square, is bordered by pretty buildings in shades of mustard, rust-red and brown adorned with ornate windows, and if you walk over Riksbron Bridge, you’ll find the Swedish Parliament. Modern architecture is spread across the city too, such as at the futuristic waterfront, the Victoria Tower and Stockholm Stadsbibliotek.
Stockholm has over 100 museums to choose from. A firm favourite of ours is the Vasa museum, home of the 17th-century warship Vasa, which tragically sank on her maiden voyage. After lying in mud at the bottom of Stockholm harbour, Vasa was rescued and has been restored to her former glory. If contemporary art’s your passion, you’ll find it at the acclaimed Moderna Museet, as well as in more surprising settings such as Stockholm’s subway. Said to be the ‘world’s longest art exhibit’, many the city’s subway stations feature paintings, sculptures and installations. Other highlights include the fun and interactive ABBA Museum, open-air museum and zoo Skansen, and Spiritmuseum which explores the history of alcohol.
Stockholm is the Perfect Place to enjoy Sweden’s coffee culture - Fika, pronounced ‘fee-ka’, is alive and kicking in Stockholm. The ritual of taking a break to enjoy a cup of coffee — and perhaps a slice of cake or a cinnamon bun — is a national pastime, and the perfect moment of calm during a busy day spent sightseeing. The in the evening, you’ll be spoilt for choice if you swap your latte for an espresso martini. Stockholm is home to excellent bars and cool clubs, and you can enjoy drinks with a view at a host of rooftop venues
Stockholm is perfect for foodies wanting to discover the local food scene. From fine dining to local traditional fare and everything in between it is all there and at some of the more contemporary places you can try reindeer, moose and wild boar, alongside fishy favourites like pickled herring and cured salmon, as well as plenty of veggie and vegan-friendly options.
And finally, if you want a little retail therapy Stockholm is an excellent place to shop for stylish souvenirs that will spark fond memories of your trip. Drottninggatan is choc-a-bloc with small boutiques, Swedish one-offs and just about every type of retailer imaginable but if it's high-end fashion you're after head for Biblioteksgatan, between Stureplan and Norrmalmstorg then for vintage, try the SoFo area featuring Skånegatan and uber-trendy Nytorget.
Location & Itinerary
Stockholm Go City https://gocity.com/en/stockholm
The Go City Card is an excellent option if you are going to visit lots of places that have entrances but as it isn't a cheap option you might want to plan you time in the city carefully. It's cost is 1649SEK full price (about £123) but you can make that up pretty quickly with a couple of museum visits (the Vasa is a must as is the Viking museum), SkyView Stockholm, a hop-on/off bus tour, the Royal Palace and a dink at ICEBAR Stockholm you'll be getting close. Your host for the trip will be planning their time around the Go City Card but there no need to rush off and purchase it straight away, wait to see what the host is planning before you do which will be announced nearer the time of the trip!
First time or returning here are a few useful things you should know.
- No cash needed: The official currency of Sweden is SEK (There's no need to exchange a lot of currency – Stockholm is in large parts a cash-free city. Although you'll find ATMs (recognized by teal/blue-green-colored signs reading "Bankomat"), many restaurants, shops, and hotels don't accept bills or coins. With that said, don't forget to bring your debit or credit card (even better if you can get one with a low or free handling charge)!
- Everyone speaks English: Swedes start studying English in school before age 10, and are happy to converse that way.
- Systembolaget has an alcohol monopoly: If you want to buy a bottle of wine or liquor outside a bar, you need to head to government-owned Systembolaget. Plan your weekend drinking ahead – the stores close early in the afternoon on Saturdays and are closed on Sundays and during public holidays. Convenience and grocery stores sell low-alcohol beer, though.
- Swedish emergency numbers:
- The Swedish emergency number is 112. Call 114 14 for all non-urgent police matters, such as providing information or reporting crimes that are not ongoing. If you are calling from abroad or from a foreign mobile in Sweden, call +46 77 114 14 00. Information in English about the Swedish police.
- The subway is an art gallery: The Stockholm subway system is said to be the world's longest art exhibit. Over the last few years, the interest has grown so big that SL (Stockholm Public Transport) now offers free guided art tours in English all year round. All you need is a valid subway ticket.
- Getting around the city: Stockholm is built upon islands and bridges. The views are everywhere are everywhere and the best way to catch them while discovering the city is on foot. So pack your best walking shoes and a portable charger!
- After work – the happy hour out of the office: "After work" is the Swedish version of happy hour. Locals head straight from the office to bars and pubs to enjoy a glass of wine or a beer, often at a slightly reduced price. Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays are the most popular days for an after work. (Often, signs outside the bars simply display the AW, followed by the hours).
Travel & Stay
Haymarket by Scandic
Opened in 2016, Haymarket by Scandic is an art-deco themed hotel in central Stockholm. The hotels grand entrance on Hotorget Square welcomes everyone to step into a 1920s era of optimism and elegance. Here in the historic building, you can stay in the midst of farmers' markets, cinemas and concert halls, within walking distance of both the central station and trendy Stureplan. Original features of the building where Greta Garbo worked in the 1920s have been carefully preserved, restored or reinterpreted for the coming 2020s. The magical and cinematic feel is a stark contrast to the modern and cosmopolitan features, creating an extraordinary design experience.
The hotel is located right in the city centre, next to cinemas, farmers' markets and market halls. The blue concert hall in Swedish 1920s classical style stands proud right opposite. Passport validity
For UK passport holders your passport must be:
- Issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
- valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)
You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System)
The rules of travel to most European countries have changed. Starting in the first half of 2025 UK citizens are required to have a travel authorisation to enter 30 European countries for a short stay.
ETIAS travel authorisation is an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to a number of European countries. It is linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new ETIAS travel authorisation.
With a valid ETIAS travel authorisation, you can enter the territory of these European countries as often as you want for short-term stays - normally for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. However, it does not guarantee entry. When you arrive, a border guard will ask to see your passport (and other documents if required) and verify that you meet the entry conditions.
NB - There is no official date for the ETIAS currently confirmed but when it is introduced it will be your responsibility to ensure that you have arranged this. We will update everyone when the ETIAS is required with information on how to apply for this online.
Travel Insurance
Please ensure that you have adequate personal travel insurance to suit your requirements in place before you travel.
A UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) gives you the right to access state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in the European Union (EU).
UK-issued European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) are still valid and offer the same cover as GHICs in the EU.
Once your EHIC has expired, you’ll be able to replace it with a GHIC.
NB – A GHIC/EHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance!
