Ski Livigno
A versatile and exciting ski resort enjoying duty-free status
Fast becoming one of the most exciting ski resorts in the Alps, Livigno is making a big name for itself as now confirmed as one of the venues for the 2026 Olympics and it’s easy to see why. Not far from the Swiss border, this snow sure resort has an extensive, modern ski area whilst retaining the traditional character of its original three villages.
The town itself sits in the valley where either side of you, the mountains rise up creating two separate ski areas, all linked by the efficient and free local buses circulating the resort. The unique layout means there are dedicated areas and lifts for beginners straight from resort level, while more experienced skiers and boarders can head to the top and enjoy a huge range of on and off-piste in the area as well as fun parks, boarder cross tracks and for those looking for some serious fun, head to the Mottolino snowpark which has hosted many international freestyle competitions.

Livigno is known for being a lively resort in terms of après ski, so if that's what you're looking for, you're in luck. There are a handful of bars and pubs to visit after a day on the slopes for an after ski beer - the Ice Bar on the central base-area slopes is a firm favourite with an Austrian style après ski scene. However, it is the nightlife that is the liveliest with people dancing until the early hours of the morning. The village is split out across the valley with venues being dotted all around, so although the general ambience may seem relaxed, don't worry because there are many places to go out and have some fun.

Beginners skiing and snowboarding in Livigno
Livigno is a dream destination for beginners, offering an exceptional and stress-free introduction to the mountains. Each ski school has its own designated area, giving learners the space and time they need without the pressure of busy slopes or long lift queues. This thoughtful layout creates a relaxed atmosphere that's perfect for building confidence from day one.
Whether you're stepping into skis or strapping on a snowboard for the first time, Livigno is one of the best places in the Alps to learn. Wide, gentle slopes and patient, English-speaking instructors make the early days feel fun and rewarding. And the best part? Progression here comes naturally, once you've mastered the basics, you’ll find a fantastic choice of cruisy blue runs stretching all the way from the top of the mountain to the village below, giving beginners a real sense of adventure and achievement.
Intermediates skiing and snowboarding in Livigno
Livigno is an intermediate skier’s paradise, offering a huge variety of terrain with the added bonus of refreshingly short lift queues. Start your day by riding the Carosello gondola, where you'll find an expansive network of wide, sun-drenched pistes ideal for perfecting your technique and carving at your own pace. From here, cruise across to the scenic Costaccia slopes above the charming old town – a great spot for flowing turns with incredible views.
For those looking to push their limits, hop on the ski bus to the Mottolino area. This side of the valley offers more challenging terrain, including confidence-building black runs that are steeper but still manageable for improving intermediates. Don’t miss the peaceful Trepalle runs, tucked away and often overlooked, they deliver a quieter, more scenic experience while still offering enough variety to keep things exciting all day long.
Advanced skiing and snowboarding in Livigno
Advanced skiers and snowboarders will find Livigno full of rewarding terrain to sink their edges into. Long, challenging red runs and a handful of steeper blacks provide the perfect playground for carving fast turns and building technical confidence. The Mottolino side of the valley, in particular, is home to some of the resort’s more demanding slopes, with steeper gradients and varied conditions to keep things interesting.
The upper sections of both the Carosello and Mottolino areas offer exciting descents with dramatic views, and the vertical drop allows for satisfyingly long runs from top to bottom. For those looking to test their legs, route-hopping across the two mountains offers plenty of mileage and varied terrain to keep even the most experienced riders entertained all day.
Off piste and snow parks in Livigno
Livigno has two extreme snow parks, of which the Mottolino side has been been voted the best in Italy, one of the many reasons Livigno will feature many freestyle events in the upcoming Winter Olympics. Whilst known for it's daunting jumps there's a lot fun to be had on the rails, boxes and smaller jumps. Be sure to check what's on in Livigno so as not to miss any freestyle displays.
Livigno and the Alta Valtellina valley offer some superb freeride opportunities. On the Mottlino side however, off piste is only permitted in certain areas and you must be accompanied by a local guide.

Passport validity
For UK passport holders your passport must be:
- Issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
- valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)
You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System)
The rules of travel to most European countries have changed. Starting in the first half of 2025 UK citizens are required to have a travel authorisation to enter 30 European countries for a short stay.
ETIAS travel authorisation is an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to a number of European countries. It is linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new ETIAS travel authorisation.
With a valid ETIAS travel authorisation, you can enter the territory of these European countries as often as you want for short-term stays - normally for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. However, it does not guarantee entry. When you arrive, a border guard will ask to see your passport (and other documents if required) and verify that you meet the entry conditions.
NB - There is no official date for the ETIAS currently confirmed but when it is introduced it will be your responsibility to ensure that you have arranged this. We will update everyone when the ETIAS is required with information on how to apply for this online.
