Turkish Blue Coast Gulet Cruise

Saturday 14 June - Saturday 21 June

(7 nights)

From £1425

Overview

Take a different look at Turkey from the decks of a traditional gulet as we cruise around the turquoise coast of the Aegean.

Do nothing more than relax and recharge your batteries, or find some adventure with optional watersports and hiking.

So many people have told us how wonderful this holiday is and many have gone back time and again. Choose how you want to relax, you can always find a quiet spot to read or just watch the world go by. There’s plenty of time for swimming and snorkelling in the warm turquoise sea; in some bays you can arrange to go water skiing, parasailing, ride a banana or even the Red Mable!

We are always being told from previous travellers how much they loved the food and that it was so much better than they imagined. All meals are prepared fresh every day by the on-board chef who works non-stop. Using locally grown produce means that tomatoes taste as they should because they’ve been ripened naturally in the sun; salads become an enjoyable part of the meal instead of just a bit of lettuce on the side of your plate. There’s loads of variety at every meal which makes life easy if you are vegetarian or have a special dietary requirement (but remember to tell us beforehand).

Would you believe it if someone told you that sleeping outside under the stars was one of the highlights of the trip? Lying under the awning, watching shooting stars, listening to owls hooting in the forest and the sea gently lapping the hull of the boat; then having the best sleep ever once everyone’s stopped giggling and saying “good night Sue Ellen” (you’ve got to be a certain age to get that one!). Of course, it’s not compulsory; you might prefer to be cocooned in your cabin.

Location & Itinerary

We will cruise from either Marmaris or Fethiye staying in port on the first and last night’s so you can have some nightlife, other nights we’ll be in bays and coves.

Sample Itinerary

DAY 1 MARMARIS

With its vibrant nightlife and shopping there’s plenty to see in Marmaris. Cabins are ready from 5pm although luggage can be dropped off earlier if needed. Service starts with Dinner onboard followed by an overnight stay in Marmaris port.

DAY 2 MARMARIS—EKINCIK GULF—DALYAN

After breakfast, you’ll be given information about the cruise and onboard safety before cruising for a couple of hours to take lunch and swim in a small bay in the Ekincik Gulf. Join the optional Dalyan Tour for the afternoon. Take an optional riverboat up the beautiful Dalyan River past the ancient burial tombs high in the rocks and onto the mudbaths, stop off at the village of Dalyan before spending time on Iztuzu beach, home of Loggerhead Turtles before returning to the gulet for the evening. Dinner and overnight stay in Ekincik Gulf.

DAY 3 ADALI BAY—MANASTIR—TERSANE

See the sunrise as we leave for our early start, cruising for around 3 hours towards the Fethiye Gulf. We will anchor at Adali Bay for breakfast. Later in the morning we will move on to Manastir (Monastery) Bay, also known as Cleopatra’s Bay and see the beautiful underwater ruins.

DAY 4 KIZIL ISLAND—FETHIYE

After breakfast we will cruise to Kizil Ada (Red Island) for lunch and a swimming break. On the fourth day of our cruise we will arrive in Fethiye around 4pm. Fethiye was known as Telemessos and was named after Apollon’s son. It has a large natural bay protected by the 12 Gocek Islands. We’ll moor here for the night so there’s plenty of time for you to enjoy the quiet, pretty town centre which is within easy walking distance for shops, bars and restaurants.

DAY 5 KATRANCI – GOCEK ISLANDS

We anchor amongst the Gocek Islands, where the James Bond film Skyfall was shot.

DAY 6 YASSICA ISLAND—DOMUZ ISLAND—AGA LIMANI

While cruising through these beautiful islands we anchor at Yassica Island. Afterwards we will go to Domuz Island then onto Aga Limani for our overnight stay

DAY 7 KUMLUBUK—CENNET ISLAND—MARMARIS

An early morning start sees us taking breakfast in Kumlubuk Bay. We’ll then go to Cennet Island for lunch before returning to Marmaris around 4pm. There will be an opportunity to go to the Turkish Baths before dinner and enjoying the nightlife in Marmaris.

DAY 8 MARMARIS

Our last breakfast in port and then it is time to say goodbye until we meet you again.

Please note the itinerary is flexible and open to change. The Captain’s decision is final.

What else is there to see and do:

Dalyan Riverboat Cruise – a day packed with so many different things to see and do. We join a small riverboat and cruise through reedbeds along the Dalyan river; passing ancient Lycian tombs carved high into the cliff face before getting down and dirty in the mudbaths. Once we’ve cleaned up we head into the small river town of Dalyan for lunch, a spot of shopping or maybe a tipple or two. Before cruising past Iztuzu beach, the nesting ground of the Loggerhead turtles.

Fethiye Village Tour – in the comfort of an air-conditioned coach we’ll head out into the mountains through local villages to the ruined city of Tlos before having a fabulous lunch in a café. We’ll get chance to buy handicrafts and take a camel ride in the abandoned village of Kayakoy before returning to the gulet in Fethiye for the evening. It’s become a Spice habit to have cocktails in the Car Cemetary Bar!

Turkish Bath – a fabulous experience which has to be tried at least once. The perfect way to relax at the Hammam in Marmaris with a scrub, wash and full body oil massage.

These optional excursions can be booked on board as they are arranged by the boat and are not part of your package. It’s entirely up to you whether you want to do any of these things, although minimum numbers may apply.

Do I need shoes? Not very often. You’ll soon get used to the gorgeous feel of the teak deck beneath your feet when you’re on board, or you can wear new flip flops if you prefer.

Is there any alcohol on board? Yes, yes and yes! The gulet has a well-stocked bar carrying plenty of water, soft drinks, wine, beer and spirits. You’re asked not to bring your own drinks on-board. You can settle your bar bill at the end of the week in GBP or Turkish Lire.

What should I pack? Definitely bring sun-cream, sunglasses, a hat and camera! Life on the boat is generally informal and you'll need nothing more than a couple of swimsuits, shorts and t-shirts and don’t forget to bring a beach towel! You will not need lots of shoes as these cannot be worn on board the gullet. If you intend to visit mosques or churches then you mustn't wear short sleeves or shorts and ladies will need to cover their hair. Please don't bring suitcases, they are difficult to store on a boat.

What currency should I bring?

Most Turkish businesses will take British Pounds, US dollars and Euros in cash or travellers cheques. You can easily change these currencies into Turkish lire at any of the currency exchange offices; although cash points are commonplace especially in larger towns.

I'm a vegetarian. Will I have trouble with the food?

Not at all, just let the Captain know at the start of your cruise. Turkish food is varied with some fabulous salads and vegetable dishes, cracked wheat and rice mean you won't get bored. For those of you who like fish, you'll have a real treat!

Travel & Stay

Turkish Gulet

Cabins are bound to be smaller than you’ll find in a hotel and cruise ship but larger than you'll find on a sailing yacht with space under your bed for your luggage, a small wardrobe (if you bother unpacking that is) and you can choose to share a twin cabin with 2 single beds or have a cabin to yourself – there’s very limited availability of these though. No matter what type of cabin you book, you’ll have an en suite bathroom with a proper flushing loo (not a pump toilet like on a sailing yacht) and a shower cubicle too. There’s never masses of hot water (you are on a gullet after all!) and certainly not in the mornings, but always after a long cruise and in the evenings so you can shower before putting on your glad rags.

A highlight of not having hot water in the mornings for the guys is there’s no need to shave the minute you wake up. Wait until one evening in the middle of the week when we visit a beautiful little bay which has a bar and restaurant complete with a proper Turkish barber who gives a wet shave and head massage in his little shack on the beach. Not only is he great at massages too but he’s even been known to use a cut-throat razor on a chest or two!
