Southern Italy, Puglia – Where the New Year Feels Like Home

After the incredible success of our 2022 New Year celebration to this area of Italy — with many of you calling it “one of the best hotels ever” — we are absolutely delighted to be returning to magical Salento.

This time Spice Escapes with WingsItaly brings you a completely a new itinerary, exploring even more hidden gems of this extraordinary region, including the enchanting towns of Specchia and Galatina and a new year day event!

Spice escapes and WingsItaly will once again have exclusivity of the hotel rooms at the elegant and wonderfully welcoming Hotel Tesoretto, where Romina & her exceptional team are eagerly awaiting our return. Romina, the owner, is the epitome of Italian elegance and has a genuine affection and deep respect for her British guests — she truly cannot wait to welcome you back.

Often called the “Florence of the South,” Lecce is a Baroque masterpiece. Its Roman Amphitheatre, ornate churches, historic piazzas and architectural treasures create a golden honey-coloured city unlike anywhere else. Excursion s of the city will be offered nearer the time !

At Christmas time, Lecce becomes even more magical. The churches are illuminated with spectacular light displays, festive markets fill the piazzas, and the entire historic centre glows beneath thousands of twinkling lights. Wandering through the streets at this time of year feels truly enchanting.

Specchia – One of Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages

The medieval hilltop town of Specchia is officially recognised as one of Italy’s most beautiful villages. Expect whitewashed alleyways, ancient stone houses, sweeping countryside views and a quiet authenticity that defines rural Salento. This is slow living at its finest.

Galatina – Art, Faith & Hidden Beauty

Elegant and lesser known, Galatina is a true hidden gem. Here you’ll discover the extraordinary frescoes of the Basilica di Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, stunning Baroque architecture, charming piazzas and authentic local cafés. It is a cultural treasure waiting to be explored.

Your host and Managing Director of WingsItaly, Claire Dymond, describes this region perfectly:

“Puglia is like nowhere else. To be Italian is one thing… to be Salentino is something else entirely.”

Salento is authentic, warm, hopefully lots of sun shine as you are south Italy and unpolished in the most beautiful way and indeed very real. With over 800km of coastline, 60 million olive trees scattered across its landscape and food traditions rooted deeply in family life, this is Italy as Italians know it — not a postcard version, but the real thing.

This New Year journey is about discovering new places, enjoying regional dishes, cheeses, focaccia, olives and so much more, drinking exceptional local wines, celebrating like the Italians do and experiencing true Italian village life.

Wine Tasting Experience

Of course, no Wings adventure would ever be complete without a proper Italian wine tasting session — after all, this is Italy, and saying no to wine here would be considered extremely suspicious behaviour.

As your adventure travels through Puglia taking, you into one of Italy’s most important wine-producing regions, famous for its bold and characterful reds such as Primitivo and Negroamaro. Here you’ll learn a little about the traditions and stories behind these wonderful wines… but more importantly you’ll taste them. Possibly more than once. Purely for research purposes, of course.

Andrea will also be carefully supervising the proceedings to ensure the tasting is carried out with the utmost professionalism — and that no glass is left unfairly neglected during your tasting experience!

Location & Itinerary

Your Provisional New Year Programme

Day 1 – Monday 28th December - Arrival

Meet and greet at your designated airport by WingsItaly and private transfer to the hotel. Begin your stay with a welcome aperitivo to set the mood, followed by dinner featuring traditional Puglian cuisine and local wines. Afterwards, enjoy optional nightcaps in the hotel’s public bar.

Day 2 – Tuesday 29th December

After a leisurely breakfast you will depart the hotel for the short transfer to the beautiful Roman town of Lecce.

Lecce is like stepping into a golden Baroque dream. Often called the 'Florence of the South', the historic centre glows with honey-coloured limestone churches, ornate balconies, and lively piazzas. At Christmas time the city becomes even more magical as elegant streets sparkle with festive lights, nativity scenes appear in ancient courtyards, and the air fills with the scent of roasting chestnuts and warm pastries. Wandering through Lecce in winter is pure southern Italian charm—beautiful, atmospheric, and wonderfully festive.

Day 3 - Wednesday 30th December

There is still some planning for this trip ongoing so please note that further details regarding additional days and town visits will be announced once town councils confirm their Christmas programmes. This means we will follow the celebrations and discover for sure wonderful surprises along the way.

Day 4 - 31st December – New Year’s Eve Gala. Buon Anno!

Exclusive to Spice Escapes & WingsItaly Guests.

Your evening begins with a private aperitivo reception, followed by a five-course gala dinner with one bottle of wine per person. There will be music, dancing and Italian entertainment as we celebrate both Italian and UK midnight traditions.

While you will enjoy your own private dining room and dancing area there will also be a lively local celebration taking place in an adjacent room with the locals! Last time we visited, what made the evening so special was guests moving between celebrations, joining the locals and sharing in the fun — a truly authentic Italian New Year experience.

Day 5 - 1st January – New Year’s Day

After the celebrations of the night before, enjoy a relaxed and leisurely morning to welcome the first day of the New Year. Late morning, we will head out to continue exploring the beautiful surroundings of Puglia, discovering another charming town or hidden corner of this wonderful region. The exact destination will be confirmed closer to the time, allowing us to take advantage of local festivities and seasonal openings. During the day you will enjoy a traditional Italian New Year’s Day lunch where you can savour regional dishes accompanied by local wines — the perfect way to start the year the Italian way. Later in the afternoon you will return to the hotel to relax before an evening of light-hearted fun, featuring a lively game of Italian Tombola, hosted by Andrea — our resident bingo master!

Day 6 - 2nd January - Final Day

Breakfast and time to say arrivederci to Romina and the WingsItaly team — until the next Italian adventure.

NB - WingsItaly follow the local programmes of events so some spontaneity may be needed and some days for visits may change once local calendars are confirmed

Passport validity

For UK passport holders your passport must be:

  • Issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.

EU Entry/Exit System (EES)

The new Entry/Exit System (EES) will start operations on 12 October 2025. The Entry/Exit System (EES) will be deployed gradually across the external borders of the 29 European countries over a period of 6 months. These European countries will introduce the different elements of the EES in phases, including the collection of biometric data, such as facial image and fingerprints. This means that travellers’ biometric data (facial image and fingerprints) might not be collected at every border crossing point right away, and their personal information may not be registered in the system. Passports will continue to be stamped as usual.

This progressive implementation will last until 9 April 2026. From 10 April 2026, the EES will be fully operational at all external border crossing points of the European countries using the system.

Further information on the EES can be found on the following link - https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees/ltr

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System)

Starting in end 2026 UK citizens are required to have a travel authorisation to enter 30 European countries for a short stay. ETIAS travel authorisation is linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new ETIAS travel authorisation.

With a valid ETIAS travel authorisation, you can enter the territory of these European countries as often as you want for short-term stays - normally for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. However, it does not guarantee entry. When you arrive, a border guard will ask to see your passport and other documents and verify that you meet the entry conditions.

NB - There is no start date for the ETIAS currently confirmed but when it is introduced it will be your responsibility to ensure that you have arranged this. We will update everyone when the ETIAS is required with information on how to apply for this online.

Travel Insurance

Please ensure that you have adequate personal travel insurance to suit your requirements in place before you travel.

 Global Health Insurance Card

A UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) gives you the right to access state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in the European Union (EU).

UK-issued European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) are still valid and offer the same cover as GHICs in the EU.

Once your EHIC has expired, you’ll be able to replace it with a GHIC.

NB – A GHIC/EHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance!
