An Italian Odyssey – Star Flyer Cruise Cabins
Overview
Following the overwhelming success and feedback from our mediterranean Clipper adventure, Spice Escapes and WingsItaly take to the seas once again this time with a slightly shorter sailing along the Italian coast on a classic elegant tall ship, the Star Flyer.
The wonderful and unique benefit of a Clipper cruise is the destinations it is possible to visit that a large cruise ship cannot reach and this awesome adventure starts and ends in the Eternal City, Roma. A new itinerary starts with 2 nights in a Roman medieval village called Viterbo located in the northern part of Lazio, north of Rome and includes a new stop off on the Clipper - Gaeta, Italy!

Viterbo is surrounded by thermal springs and is also famous for being a perfectly preserved medieval village, with features such as the Palazzo dei Papi in Piazza San Lorenzo and The Park of the Monsters “Parco dei Mostri,” in the Garden of Bomarzo; it was never meant to be pretty, commissioned in 1552 by Prince Pier Francesco Orsini, it was an expression of his grief. The prince, had just been through a brutal war, his friend was killed, he was held for ransom for years, and came home to have his beloved wife die. Racked with grief, the prince wanted to create a “Villa of Wonders” and hired the famous architect Pirro Ligorio. Ligorio was a widely respected architect and had previously completed the Cathedral of Saint Peter in Rome, as well as the Villa d’Este in Tivoli. This was to be an unusual, but interesting job for the famous architect!
After your time in Viterbo , you will then join the Clipper for 5 days sailing and stopping off on the famous Amalfi Coast, famous for its picturesque towns, cliffs, beaches, and stunning coastlines dotted with colorful villages.
Sailing on a Clipper takes you back to the glamorous sailing of yesteryear. Conceived by a British designer, the interior is Edwardian and old navy style.
Location & Itinerary
Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1 – Departing the UK your adventure begins in Roma with a meet and greet by WingsItaly at the airport , then it is a private transfer to Viterbo. Depending on flight times and arrival a group dinner is included in the hotel in Viterbo. Viterbo is a small off-the-beaten track city full of medieval architecture and is fortunate to be surrounded by thermal springs, Viterbo is also famous for the San Pellegrino district featuring perfectly preserved medieval architecture, such as the Palazzo dei Papi in Piazza San Lorenzo.
Day 2 - After breakfast it’s time to explore Viterbo. In the afternoon there is an option for a private transfer to visit to a local vineyard for wine tasting then back to the hotel where a group meal will be arranged at your own expense in a local restaurant.
Day 3 - Checking out of the hotel after breakfast we head to the famous Park of Monsters https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-monsters-of-bomarzo-bomarzo-italy. (approx. 15 mins)
Then it’s a stop off for lunch at your own expense, before we continue on to Civitavecchia to board the Star Flyer Clipper for your 5-day adventure.
Day 4 - During the Middle Ages Gaeta, a coastal city south of Rome, was a fortified settlement, and vibrant port which carried out trade with countries in the eastern Mediterranean. Gaeta is shrouded in history and rich in ancient monuments. Here you will find Monte Orlando Park, a protected area with Roman ruins, Access to Monte Orlando is only on foot or by a shuttle bus during summer months. As you ascend the mountain you will pass the statue of the Madonna and Child which looks out protectively over the beautiful Bay of Gaeta. It is a paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers.
Day 5 - During the Middle Ages, Amalfi was a powerful republic of 70,000 people, rivalling nearby Ravello. For a sense of Amalfi's medieval glory, wander through the grand Duomo, containing the remains of St. Andrew. Amalfi is a magnificent coastal town offering an enchanting blend of natural beauty, rich history and Mediterranean charm.
Day 6 - Sorrento, whose city walls rise straight out of the sea, is located on the lovely Amalfi Coast and overlooks the Bay of Naples. Optional excursions might include taking a trip back in history to Pompeii, where the ashen remains of ancient Romans lie frozen in time.
Day 7 - The pastel houses of Ponza Town rise in neat terraced rows from the busy harbour where sleekly groomed yachts and ramshackle fishing boats moor side by side. Happily, there are few tourists here, so it's a delight to wander through the unspoiled town.
Day 8 – Return to Civitavechia to disembark and head for our return flights home.

- 115 metres long

Historically a Clipper was a mid-19th-century merchant sailing vessel, designed for speed, sailing globally primarily on trade routes between the United Kingdom and China. The British played a large part in the boom years, in 1843 as we loved our cuppa and brew, and us Brits wanted faster delivery of tea from China. The rest is history.

Passport validity
For UK passport holders your passport must be:
- Issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
- valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)
You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System)
The rules of travel to most European countries have changed. Starting in the first half of 2025 UK citizens are required to have a travel authorisation to enter 30 European countries for a short stay.
ETIAS travel authorisation is an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to a number of European countries. It is linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new ETIAS travel authorisation.
With a valid ETIAS travel authorisation, you can enter the territory of these European countries as often as you want for short-term stays - normally for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. However, it does not guarantee entry. When you arrive, a border guard will ask to see your passport (and other documents if required) and verify that you meet the entry conditions.
NB - There is no official date for the ETIAS currently confirmed but when it is introduced it will be your responsibility to ensure that you have arranged this. We will update everyone when the ETIAS is required with information on how to apply for this online.
Travel Insurance
Please ensure that you have adequate personal travel insurance to suit your requirements in place before you travel. Spice Escapes have arranged a scheme with Staysure who are fully authorised and regulated by the FCA (firm reference number 663617) full details of which can be found on the FCA website www.fca.org.uk. A UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) gives you the right to access state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in the European Union (EU).
UK-issued European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) are still valid and offer the same cover as GHICs in the EU.
Once your EHIC has expired, you’ll be able to replace it with a GHIC.
NB – A GHIC/EHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance!
