Walking Tenerife
Spring walking on the Canary Islands
The Atlantic Island of Tenerife is the largest and most diverse of the Canary Islands archipelago. It is dominated by the towering heights of the snow-capped, Pico del Teide. This majestic mountain divides the island into two distinct climate zones. The southern half of the island is hot and arid whilst the north-western area, being sheltered by Teide’s massive crater is lush and alive with tropical vegetation and vineyards. Higher up the scent of pine forests signals another change of landscape before you emerge on to the lunar like landscapes around Teide itself. There is also the beautiful rocky mountain and coastal scenery of the Anaga peninsula on the island’s north-eastern tip not to mention the many enchanting mountain villages to be discovered.

Situated on the north coast and rising up from the sea front, Puerto de la Cruz is a relaxed resort and not as crowded and touristy as some of the southern resorts. The town has grown up around a smaller fishing village and while there is still a small fishing industry the principal occupation is now tourism. One of the greatest attractions of “el Puerto” is the Lago Martianez. This series of seawater pools conceived by the Canary artist Cesar Manrique forms an extraordinary spot for bathing and resting in the sun – ideal for your day off! For our evenings there are numerous relaxing bars and cafes but if we want something livelier there are also casinos and night clubs nearby.
Our base of the week is the excellent 4-star H10 Tenerife Playa which is ideally located in the attractive seaside resort of Puerto de la Cruz, which enables us access to all the best walking area. Add to this the mild March climate where temperatures rarely fall below 20C and we have all the ingredients for a perfect walking holiday!
Location & Itinerary
Beautiful Walking
Although many visitors to the island don’t realise it Tenerife offers a wealth of superb walking trails. Fascinating routes course through dense forests, plunging ravines, ‘other worldly’ volcanic landscapes and unspoiled coastlines; in some places it’s possible to walk all day and never encounter another living soul. As we are staying in the old fishing port of Puerto de la Cruz on the island’s central north coast, we will be concentrating our hikes on the 3 main mountain areas in the island’s north – The Macizo de Teno, the Anaga Mountains and of course the Teide National Park.
The Macizo de Teno lying on the western tip of Tenerife gives superb views across to the islands of La Palma and La Gomera whilst the massive and vertiginous barrancos plunge down to ocean below. In the beautiful and lush Anaga mountains to the east we will have the chance to walk the impressive ridges near Cruz del Carmen or maybe for the more moderate group descend to one of the many lovely bays of that area. Closer to the resort there is the delightful Orotava valley where the hard walkers can ascend through the welcome shade of the pine forests to the amazing Los Organos viewpoint. We cannot of course come to Tenerife without visiting the Mount Teide national park, and the high mountain road from Puerto de la Cruz to Las Canadas make many of the park’s high peaks accessible in a day. Both sets of walkers will be able to delight in the lunar like landscapes and fascinating rock formations such as Roque Cinchado or climb one of Teide’s satellite peaks such as Guajara or Montana Blanca –we may even be able to get up to Teide’s incredible summit but that will be dependent on both the availability of permits and the weather. With such a wealth of habitats and scenery our walking program is varied to say the least.
Each day you can choose from two walks, either take it easy, walking 7-9 miles with between 300 & 1,200 ft of ascent, or push yourself a little, doing 8-12 miles with up to 3,500 ft ascent (some hard walks may require a good head for heights). Please note - this is a walking holiday and prior walking experience is required. That said we are staying in Puerto de la Cruz, and if you don’t wish to walk on any day, there is plenty to do.
Travel & Stay
We have chosen one of the most prestigious hotels in the area, located in Puerto de la Cruz, in the north of Tenerife, the H10 Tenerife Playa is set right on the front of the well-known Lago Martianez, just 50 meters from the sea! The hotel has comprehensive facilities featuring swimming pools (one of which is heated), solarium jacuzzi, bars and restaurants to satisfy the widest gastronomic palate. In addition, the hotel also offers internet, gym, sauna, laundry service and even a hairdresser. The bedrooms all come with a compulsory balcony and are all very well appointed with TVs (with international channels), air conditioning, ensuite, bathrooms, hair driers and they all have a view of sea, the promenade, or the swimming pool-perfect!

Host & Everything Else
The weather on Tenerife is often described as spring all year, with a typical March temperature of 20oC (average of 7 hours of daily sunshine) which is very pleasant for walking! But as always there is a little more to it than this, the main rains fall in December, January and February, which turn the northern part of the island so green thereafter. The winds have a dominant affect on the weather; a northerly, brings cloud by lunch time, the easterlies heat and dry haze, and the tropical winds the possibility of thunder! So as clear as Michael Fish! You should pack for sunny days and protect yourself from the direct sun as well as drinking plenty of water, but also be aware that at over 2500m it can also turn quite cold, and fleeces and waterproofs may be needed.
You need to have many of the same things with you, as you would have for a typical British spring day on the mountains. The following list is a suggestion of what you may wish to bring with you
You MUST have:
- Walking boots
- A Water bottle (minimum 1 litre, 2litre is much better)
- A Rucksack with a plastic liner
- Waterproofs: jacket and trousers
- A Warm hat
- Warm gloves (not leather)
- Thick walking socks
- Base layer: (thin thermal or warm T-shirt. Best not to be cotton as it gets cold when wet)
- Over layer: (warm sweater or fleece)
- Extra layer: warm top for when cold (e.g. when stopped for lunch)
- Comfortable walking trousers (not jeans as they are too cold & heavy when wet)
- Personal Medication
- A torch for use in the tunnels
- Smart casual clothes for the evening.
- T shirts
- Shorts
- Swim wear
- Sun tan lotion
- Sun glasses
You may wish to bring:
- Vacuum flask (if you like hot drinks on the hill)
- Medium size Tupperware container or plastic bag, to put picnic lunch in.
- Sit mat
- Lip salve
- Camera
- Personal first aid kit
