50th birthday holiday ideas when you are going on your own, with a host and a group

3 October 2026 · 6 min read

If you are looking for 50th birthday holiday ideas and there is no one obvious to go with, a hosted group holiday lets you mark the year properly without planning it all alone or spending it in a hotel room for one. Spice Escapes runs small group holidays with a host who travels with you, so you can choose the big trip you have always meant to take and arrive to a group of people who will be glad to raise a glass with you.

The same goes for a 60th. A round-number birthday has a way of asking what you have been waiting for. If the answer used to be a partner, a friend who kept postponing, or a family that was always too busy, this page is for you. It covers how a birthday trip works when you book on your own, and five holidays we run that suit a year worth marking.

Why a group suits a birthday you are marking on your own

The worry most people tell us about is the evening itself. Sitting at a table for one on the night that is meant to be special is the picture that stops people booking anything at all. On a Spice holiday that evening does not happen unless you want it to. The group eats together most nights, the host knows everyone by name from the first day, and there is always a seat beside someone you have already had breakfast with.

Our groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. That is small enough to feel like company rather than a coach party, and big enough that you will find people you click with. Most people book on their own, so you will not be the only one who arrived without a plus one. If this is your first time travelling this way, our guide for first-time solo travellers walks through the first day, and group holidays for people travelling on their own explains the hosted format in full.

You stay in a room to yourself, which every Spice holiday charges a single supplement or room-to-yourself cost for. Our single supplement page sets out how that works, so you know the real figure before you decide.

A birthday year, not a birthday date

Here is the honest bit. Group holidays leave on set dates, and the chance of one leaving on your exact birthday is small. Most people we talk to stop chasing the day and treat it as their birthday year trip instead, the one they book because the number changed. That opens up far more choice, from a few nights in a city to ten days on the other side of the world.

Whether to tell the group is entirely up to you. Some people mention it on the first evening and find themselves toasted at dinner. Others keep it quiet and simply enjoy knowing why they came.

The big one: South Africa with a host from arrivals

For a birthday that deserves a long flight, South Africa Discovery is the trip people save up for. After the overnight flight you are met in arrivals in Cape Town by our local host, Sue Giddings, who stays with the group for the whole holiday. That first hour, landing alone a long way from home, is the part people dread, and it is already taken care of.

The days take in Chapman's Peak Drive, Cape Point and the penguins at Boulders Beach, and there is an overnight at a private game reserve with a sunrise game drive. It runs for 10 nights, departing 29 Mar 2027 – 8 Apr 2027, from £3,499. Places: 9 places left. More on the country is on our South Africa page, and our other long-haul trips are under worldwide adventures.

Something once in a lifetime: Chasing the Eclipse

If you want your birthday year to be remembered for a single moment, few trips offer one quite like Chasing the Eclipse. The group is based in Vejer de la Frontera in southern Spain, in the path of a total solar eclipse, with Dr Matthew Bothwell, the University of Cambridge Public Astronomer, as the expert for the week. You stay in Hotel Tugasa Convento San Francisco, a restored former Franciscan monastery in the heart of the town.

Around the eclipse itself, the plans include Jerez for sherry and flamenco, a day in Cádiz by the Atlantic, and a guided walk round Vejer. It is hosted by Rob Thompson, runs for 7 nights, departs 31 Jul 2027 – 7 Aug 2027 and is from £2,899. Places: 18 places left.

A celebration built in: Paris on the Seine

For a shorter birthday treat, All Inclusive Perfect Paris puts the party on the itinerary for you. Your hotel is a river boat moored a short walk from the Eiffel Tower, and the second evening is a gala dinner and celebration on board. Meals and drinks on board are included, so nobody has to work out how to split a bill.

There is a guided coach tour of the city, a guided walk round Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur, and a cruise through Paris by night if the river allows. It runs for 3 nights, departing 3 Feb 2027 – 6 Feb 2027, from £679, with Samantha Pike as your host. Places: 13 places left.

No airports at all: the Fjordland cruise

Some people want their birthday trip to start the moment they leave the house. Summertime Fjordland Cruise sails from London Tilbury and back, calling at Eidfjord, Austefjorden for Bergen, Måløy and Geiranger. Full board, the spa, the pool and the hot tubs are all included, which makes the sea days feel like a present to yourself.

It runs for 8 nights, departing 21 Aug 2027 – 29 Aug 2027, from £1,129, hosted by Pam Harte. Places: 5 places left.

A slower week by the sea: Croatian Chillout

Not every milestone calls for fireworks. If you would rather mark it with sunshine, swims and long dinners, Croatian Chillout takes the group to the island of Lošinj in the spring. You stay half board at Hotel Punta, so breakfast and dinner are taken care of, and there is a boat day round the archipelago with a chance of seeing dolphins.

It is hosted by Jackie Whyte, runs for 7 nights, departs 1 May 2027 – 8 May 2027 and is from £869. Places: 15 places left.

Questions people ask

Is it odd to go on a birthday holiday on your own?

Far less odd than people fear, and on a hosted group holiday it hardly comes up. Most people on our holidays booked on their own, so arriving alone is the normal way to start.

Will anyone know it is my birthday?

Only if you tell them. Plenty of people mention it at dinner and get a toast from the table, and plenty keep it to themselves.

Can a friend come with me for my 50th?

Yes, friends often book together and share the group like everyone else. Our page on holidays to go on with friends explains how that works with rooms and booking.

Do I have to share a room?

No, you have a room to yourself. Every holiday carries a single supplement or room-to-yourself cost, and we will tell you the figure for the trip you are looking at before you commit.

What if no departure falls on my birthday?

That is usual, and most people simply choose the trip they want in their birthday year. Tell us roughly when your birthday is and we will tell you which departures sit closest to it.

Plan your birthday trip with us

If a birthday is coming up and you have been waiting for someone to go with, you do not need to wait any longer. Have a look at our holidays for over 50s travelling solo, and if you have no one in mind to take, our page for people with no one to go on holiday with is a good read too.

Then get in touch. Rob Thompson, who owns Spice Escapes and hosts holidays himself, and the rest of the team will talk you through which trip fits the year you want to mark, what the room to yourself costs and who the host is. Send us a question through our contact page and tell us which birthday it is.
