A city, a few nights, and somebody to have dinner with

Three or four nights in a European city, with a host who has been before and a group small enough to walk about in. The point of doing a city this way is not that you could not find your own way round Prague — plenty of people could. It is that at seven in the evening you have somewhere to be and someone to be there with. The pace runs gentle to moderate. In a city that mostly means a lot of walking on level ground and standing about in galleries rather than anything strenuous, and each holiday says which of the two it is before you book. If your knees have opinions, start at the gentle end. Your accommodation and breakfast every morning are in the price on all of them, and an airport transfer at both ends on several. Flights are offered on every one and included outright on some, so check the holiday rather than assume. What else is arranged differs and each page lists it — Budapest includes a lunch, a wine tasting in Buda Castle and dinner on a river cruise; Seville includes a two-day hop-on hop-off bus ticket. Most of these have a room of your own available, priced on the holiday itself. Sharing a twin with another solo traveller of the same sex costs nothing on top of the price shown.

    Starting in Paris, near to the Eiffel Tower is lovely. After the communal meal, some of us walked to the Eiffel Tower which is even more lovely at night.

    We changed hotels as we travelled, so experienced staying in a smaller French town too. This was so interesting and made the holiday feel more of a trip, rather than a short break.

    The evening meals were grouped, but also you get to pick and pay for your choices and close to the hotel, so easy to go back when ready.

    Giverny is lovely, the Champagne tasting was a completely different experience that I probably wouldn’t have had a chance to try.

    I’d definitely return to Giverny, preferably later to see how it looks in Summer (well June/July/August). This is an excellent first trip. It’s shorter, varied and you get to meet people.
