Cruising without the table for one

The thing that quietly spoils a cruise for somebody travelling alone is not the cabin. It is walking into the dining room. On these you board with a Spice group and a host who has already booked the table, so the ship is the setting rather than the whole company. They are not one kind of holiday. There is a river cruise on the Lower Ganges out of Kolkata, a Mediterranean cruise that starts with a night in Rome, a summer sailing through the Norwegian fjords, four nights on the water at Venice, and a Maldives fortnight that is half live-aboard and half island. Four nights to twelve, so a cruise here can be a long weekend or a proper expedition. Once you are aboard, most things are in the price. Every meal on the ship is included on all of them; several add a drinks package or drinks with dinner; port charges and taxes are covered; and on some the crew’s gratuities are already settled, so nobody is working out envelopes on the last morning. Shore excursions are included on some, and each holiday lists exactly what its own price covers. Cabins differ from ship to ship. Where a single cabin can be had on a departure it is priced on that holiday’s page, and where none is showing, ask us rather than assume. Sharing a twin cabin with another solo traveller of the same sex costs nothing on top of the price shown.
