Going long-haul on your own

Three holidays outside Europe, ten nights to twelve: a river cruise on the Lower Ganges out of Kolkata, a discovery trip through South Africa, and a Maldives fortnight split between a live-aboard boat and an island. Long-haul is where travelling alone gets genuinely harder. The flights are longer, the arrival is more disorientating, and there is more between you and the hotel — which is exactly where a hosted group earns its keep. Somebody meets you, the transfers are arranged, and you are not standing in an unfamiliar airport at two in the morning working out what a taxi ought to cost. They are also among the most inclusive holidays on the site. The Ganges cruise covers full board, a drinks package, shore excursions with entrance fees and English-speaking guides, all port charges and the crew’s gratuities. South Africa covers the accommodation, a local Spice host and the meals set out in the itinerary. The Maldives covers full board on the boat, the island stay and the speedboat transfers between them. Passports, visas and vaccinations stay yours to sort out, and each holiday page carries the entry requirements for where it goes. The pace is gentle to moderate. Sharing a twin with another solo traveller of the same sex costs nothing on top of the price shown.
