Holidays for single introverts: company when you want it, your own room when you do not

2 October 2026 · 6 min read

The best holidays for single introverts give you company when you want it and a door you can close when you do not. Spice Escapes runs small hosted group holidays for people who travel on their own, and every booking comes with a host who does the introductions for you, a group of around fifteen people (some reach twenty), and days where joining in is an offer rather than a rule.

If you are a quiet person, you probably know the feeling this page is about. You would love to see somewhere new, with some company at dinner, but a holiday of icebreakers and compulsory fun makes you want to stay at home with a book. Going completely alone means a week of tables for one. A hosted group sits between the two.

What quiet people tell us they dread, and what actually happens

The worries are nearly always the same. Arriving and not knowing a soul. Being expected to perform at dinner. Getting stuck with the loudest person in the group for a week. Feeling rude for wanting an afternoon alone.

Your host is there from the start and does the first introductions, so you never have to walk up to a table of strangers and announce yourself. Plans are usually made over breakfast or a drink, and you say yes to the ones you fancy. Nobody keeps a register. Most people book on their own, so everyone is in the same boat on the first evening, and that tends to make the conversation gentle and curious. If you slip off after dinner, people assume you are tired, because often they are too.

The room question matters to introverts more than most. Having your own space to recharge is what lets you enjoy the sociable parts. Every Spice holiday carries a single supplement or a room-to-yourself cost. Our single supplement guide explains what you pay for and why.

A week of books and quiet in northern Spain

If we could hand one holiday to a quiet person, it would be Read, Relax & Restore: A Week in Spain's Green North. It is 7 nights at Agara, a large renovated house in Cantabria, and its stated priority is giving you space and time. During the day you choose solitude or shared time, to read on your own or to chat. Every room is sole occupancy, so it works out at roughly two of you to a bathroom.

Breakfast, a light lunch and dinner are provided each day, with wine and beer you help yourself to. There are bikes at the house, self-guided walking routes, and a very friendly resident dog, which some quieter guests find is the easiest companion of all. On a good day the group might take its books to a beach. You do not need to be a big reader. A magazine counts.

The evenings are when everyone comes together for home-cooked, family-style food, and the plans include a murder mystery and a literary quiz. For an introvert that rhythm is about right: a whole day to yourself if you want it, then company with a shared purpose. Your host is Jackie Whyte. Departures are 5 Jun 2027 – 12 Jun 2027, from £969. Availability: 13 places left.

When you would rather do something than talk about it

Plenty of quieter people find it easier to make friends side by side than face to face. The Spanish Drawing and Painting Break with Tuition is built on that. You spend 7 nights at the same twelve-bedroom house, with tuition from Dale Scott and sketch pads and a canvas provided. Dale helps every level, including complete beginners.

The days give the group something to look at together: seascapes at Comillas, the bridge at Barcena Mayor, a picnic on the mountain pass to Carmona, and still life back at the house. Drawing next to someone is an easy way to get to know them, and the silences are comfortable because everyone is busy. Three rooms have their own bathroom, for a supplement, and the rest share. Dates are 24 Apr 2027 – 1 May 2027, from £929.

A lake, a ferry timetable and your own pace

Lake Como Discovery suits the introvert who likes to wander. You stay at a hotel in Como itself, ten minutes' walk from the historic centre, for 5 nights. Ferries run to Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio whenever you fancy a day out, so you can join a few others or go on your own with a notebook.

The host's routine is ideal for quiet people. Steve Dell gathers everyone over breakfast to talk about the day, and again in the hotel bar in the evening before dinner. In between, your time is yours, and there is a rooftop pool terrace for an afternoon off. The hotel has single rooms with a single bed and sole occupancy doubles, and the supplements reflect which you choose. Dates are 14 Oct 2026 – 19 Oct 2026, from £999. Availability: Waitlist only. Our page on holidays in Italy has more.

A cruise with plenty of quiet corners

A big ship sounds wrong for an introvert, but it can work well. The Summertime Fjordland Cruise sails from London Tilbury and back, so there are no flights or airports to face. Over 8 nights it calls at Eidfjord, Austefjorden for Bergen, Måløy and Geiranger, with sea days in between.

The ship, Ambience, carries around 1,400 guests, which means there is always a deck rail or a lounge where nobody needs anything from you. Full board, the spa, the pool and the hot tubs are included in the fare. Your Spice group is the small, familiar crowd inside the big one, with Pam Harte looking after it. Dates are 21 Aug 2027 – 29 Aug 2027, from £1,129. Availability: 2 places left. More gentle weeks are on our chillout and relaxation holidays page.

Which kind of quiet are you?

  • You want to switch off completely: the reading week, where solitude in the day is the plan.

Questions people ask

Is it okay to do my own thing some days?

Yes, and plenty of people do. Your host suggests plans and arranges meet-ups, but you choose what to join. Telling the host you are taking a day for yourself is all it takes.

Will I have to share a room with a stranger?

Room arrangements vary by holiday, and a room to yourself carries a supplement. Ask us and we will tell you exactly what each holiday offers.

What if I find the group too much?

The host keeps an eye on everyone, and stepping away for an hour or an evening is completely normal. If something is bothering you, a quiet word with your host usually sorts it.

Which country is best for introverts?

Places with an easy pace and space to wander suit quieter people best. Northern Spain, with its villages and coastline, and the Italian lakes, with ferries you can take on your own, both work well. The fjords of Norway, seen from the deck, are another calm choice.

Talk it through with a real person first

If you are an introvert, a phone call about a holiday can feel like a lot. You can just as easily send us a message with your questions and read the answer in your own time. Rob Thompson, who owns Spice Escapes and hosts holidays himself, will tell you honestly which trip suits a quieter traveller, what the rooms are like and who your host would be. Get in touch here and take it from there at your own pace.
