Holidays for solo travellers over 40, built around a working life
The best holidays for solo travellers over 40 are the ones that fit the life you actually have now: a full-time job, a fixed allowance of leave, and friends whose holidays are booked around school terms or a partner. Spice Escapes runs small hosted group holidays for people in their 40s, 50s and 60s who are travelling on their own, so you book one place, a host from our team travels with you, and the company is part of the trip from the first evening.
Most people who ask us about this are not short of confidence. They are short of someone to go with. The friend who used to say yes now has a teenager doing exams or a new partner. You could wait for diaries to line up, or go anyway, with a group that has already said yes.
Where your forties leave you
This decade has a particular shape. You may be newly separated and working out what a holiday looks like when it is yours to choose. You may have children who spend some weeks with their other parent, leaving a gap in the calendar that feels louder than it should. You may simply have stayed single while everyone around you paired off, and be tired of being the spare seat at someone else's villa.
What tends to come with it is more money than time. You can afford a good hotel, but you cannot afford to waste four days of annual leave on a trip that does not work. That is the real reason a hosted group suits this stage: the flights or train, the hotel and the plan are settled before you leave, the host knows the place, and there is a table to sit at every evening without you having to arrange it. New to this? Our page for first-time solo travellers walks through the first day.
The holidays below fall into three kinds: a long weekend you can fit around work, one proper active week, and one week where nothing needs deciding.
A long weekend in Paris with the bill already settled
All Inclusive Perfect Paris is 3 nights, which is the kind of trip that costs you two days off work rather than a week. Your hotel is a boat on the Seine, moored a short walk from the Eiffel Tower, and it is full board with drinks on board, so the wallet stays in the cabin. There is a guided coach tour of the city, a walking tour of Montmartre and the Sacré-Cœur and, river permitting, a cruise through Paris by night.
The afternoons are free, which is when people who met the evening before decide where to go together. People arrive by plane or by Eurostar and link up for the transfer, so you are with the group from the start. Samantha Pike hosts. Dates: 3 Feb 2027 – 6 Feb 2027. From £679, with 13 places left. There is more on the boat in seeing Paris from the Seine.
Iceland for the person who wants to be out in the weather
If your idea of switching off is a lava field and a waterfall rather than a sunlounger, Iceland Discovery gives you 4 nights based at the Centerhotel Plaza in central Reykjavik, which has a bar to sit in afterwards. Entrance to the Blue Lagoon is in the price, and there is a full day on the Golden Circle taking in Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, plus a panoramic tour of the capital.
We hope for the Northern Lights, but they do not perform to order. Jackie Whyte hosts. Dates: 12 Nov 2026 – 16 Nov 2026. From £1,065, with 3 places left. See more of the island on our Iceland page.
The one active week: skiing Les Arcs with a host
Plenty of people in their forties last skied at university, or have never skied and always meant to. Ski Les Arcs is 7 nights at Hotel Les Mélèzes, seventy metres from the slopes, on full board so there is no hunting for dinner after a day on the mountain. The Paradiski area is 425 kilometres of runs, with ski schools for every level.
The hotel has a sun terrace looking towards Mont Blanc, a bar, a games room and evening entertainment, which is where a ski group becomes a group of friends. Lauren Fawkes hosts. Dates: 23 Jan 2027 – 30 Jan 2027. From £1,509, with 5 places left. If you are rusty, read how to ace a beginners ski holiday first, and browse every ski and winter holiday.
A week where nothing needs deciding: all inclusive in Fuerteventura
Some people at this age have spent a year making every decision for everyone else and want a week where the only question is pool or beach. All Inclusive Fuerteventura Winter Sun & Fun is 7 nights at the Occidental Jandía Royal Level, an adults-only hotel where all meals and drinks are included.
You get a four-star sea-view room, Jandía Beach for long walks, and a spa, jacuzzi and pool for the days you do nothing. Having a host and a group means dinner is company, not a table for one. Steve Dell hosts. Dates: 30 Jan 2027 – 6 Feb 2027. From £1,199, with 3 places left.
Athens, for the history you never had time for
Ancient Athens is 4 nights and starts the way a good group trip should, with dinner together at a local restaurant on the first evening. From there you choose: the Acropolis and Ancient Agora with a licensed guide, a food tour with more than eighteen tastings from koulouri to gigantes, or a day of wandering on your own.
Jackie Whyte hosts. Dates: 10 Mar 2027 – 14 Mar 2027. From £579, with 16 places left. Every short trip we run is listed under short breaks.
The cost of having the room to yourself
Every Spice Escapes holiday carries a cost for a room of your own, and we show it rather than hide it. How much depends on the hotel or boat, and each holiday page sets it out. Our single supplement page explains how it works and what to ask. The wider picture of how our trips run for people on their own is on our solo holidays page, and what makes a Spice Escape different covers the host's part in it.
Questions people ask
Will everyone else already know each other?
Most people on a Spice Escapes holiday book on their own, so nearly everyone arrives as a stranger. The host makes the introductions, and the first evening is usually spent together.
What ages usually come on a holiday like this?
Spice Escapes is built for people in their 40s, 50s and 60s, and who books varies from one departure to the next. If it matters to you, ask us about a particular holiday before you book and we will tell you honestly what to expect.
I only have a few days of leave left. What fits?
The short breaks are the answer, with Paris, Iceland and Athens all built around a long weekend or a few days either side of one. You get the host and the group without using a whole week.
Is an all inclusive holiday sociable if I go alone?
It is with a host and a group, because there is always someone to eat with and someone to sit by the pool with. You can still take a quiet afternoon with a book whenever you want one.
How big are the groups?
Our groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. That is enough for you to find your people and small enough that everyone knows everyone by the second day.
Tell us what your year looks like
The quickest way to the right trip is to tell us how much leave you have, when you can get away and whether you want to be busy or still. Rob Thompson, who owns Spice Escapes and hosts trips himself, and the rest of the team will match you to a departure, tell you who is hosting and answer anything you want to know about the group. Send us an enquiry and we will come back to you with places and dates.
