Holidays for nervous travellers: met on arrival, or no airport at all
Holidays for nervous travellers work best when the hard parts of the journey are taken off your hands, and that is what Spice Escapes does. We run small hosted group holidays for people who mostly travel on their own, and on the five trips below someone meets you as you arrive, or there is no airport to face at all.
This page is about a particular kind of nerves. Not shyness about meeting a group (our page on solo trips with strangers covers that), but the journey itself. The departure board, passport control, walking out into arrivals with no idea where to stand. Perhaps a partner always did that part. It is a common worry, and one we can plan around.
What nervous travellers tell us they dread
Missing a connection. Not finding the transfer. Reaching a hotel late, alone, where nobody speaks English. Very little of that is about the destination. It is about the first few hours, and having nobody to ask.
Once you are with the group, most of it goes. Every Spice holiday has a host who travels with the group, knows the plan for each day and is the person you turn to when you are not sure. Our groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty, and most people book on their own, so there is no couple to trail behind and nobody expects you to know the way. You have a room to yourself, which carries a single supplement or room-to-yourself cost, and our single supplement page explains exactly how that works.
So the useful question is how each holiday begins. These are the ones where the start is gentlest.
No airport at all: Ypres by Eurostar
World War I - A Journey of Memory & Meaning with Wings starts at London St Pancras, where you board the Eurostar. There is no airport and no flight. When the train reaches Lille you are met in person by your hosts, Claire Dymond and Andrea Dal Moro of Wings, and the whole group continues by private transfer to Ypres in Belgium.
You stay 3 nights at the Albion Hotel, a family-run hotel kept by Christiane and her daughter Ruth, with full breakfast each morning. A local guide takes the group to Tyne Cot and the trenches at Sanctuary Wood, and the Last Post sounds at the Menin Gate each evening, minutes from the hotel. Dates are 8 Apr 2027 – 11 Apr 2027, from £1,019, hosted by Claire Dymond. Places left: 14 places left.
A short break is often the right first step, and our other short breaks are listed together.
No airport at all: the Norwegian fjords from Tilbury
The Summertime Fjordland Cruise sails from London Tilbury and comes back to Tilbury, so there are no flights and no airports from beginning to end. The ship calls at Eidfjord, Austefjorden for Bergen, Måløy and Geiranger. Full board, the spa, the pool and the hot tubs are all included in the fare.
For a nervous traveller a cruise has a quiet advantage: once you have found your cabin, the journey comes to you. One honest note: Geiranger is a tender port, so you go ashore by small boat. It runs for 8 nights, 21 Aug 2027 – 29 Aug 2027, from £1,129, with Pam Harte as your host. Places left: 6 places left. See our other cruises too.
A day in hand before the ship: Mediterranean cruising from Rome
If the thought of a late flight and a ship sailing without you keeps you awake, Mediterranean Cruising Italian Style with WingsItaly was built with you in mind. You fly to Rome the day before the cruise begins, so a delay cannot cost you the ship. WingsItaly meet and greet you at the airport, a short transfer takes you to a central hotel, and a hosted informal walk gently introduces you to the streets around it.
The next day the group travels together to Civitavecchia and boards the Costa Toscana, with drinks and gratuities included on board. Andrea and Claire host throughout. It runs for 8 nights, 6 May 2027 – 14 May 2027, from £1,679. Places left: 11 places left.
Met at the airport and looked after: New Year in Puglia
On New Year in Puglia with WingsItaly, Claire and Andrea meet you at the airport and stay with you. A private transfer takes you to the hotel, where the stay opens with a welcome aperitivo and a dinner of traditional Puglian food and local wine.
New Year's Eve is a private five-course gala with a bottle of wine each, and a local celebration runs in the room next door, so guests drift between the two. It is 5 nights, 28 Dec 2026 – 2 Jan 2027, from £1,139, hosted by Claire Dymond. Places left: 17 places left. If the season matters more than the place, our Christmas and New Year breaks for solo travellers page lists the others.
Train or plane, with company from the start: Paris
All Inclusive Perfect Paris lets you choose how you get there. Some people come by Eurostar and some fly into Charles de Gaulle, and we link people up for the transfer and the first day, so you are not on your own.
Your hotel is the boat itself, moored a short walk from the Eiffel Tower, with full board and drinks on board, so the wallet stays in the cabin. It is 3 nights, 3 Feb 2027 – 6 Feb 2027, from £679, with Samantha Pike as host. Places left: 16 places left.
Why the nerves get smaller each time
Group travel does build confidence, but in small steps. You get through the station or the airport once with someone waiting at the other end. You come home with names in your phone and the knowledge that you can do it, and the next trip starts with less dread.
That is why we suggest nervous travellers begin with the start that worries them least, not the destination they most want. If you are new to travelling alone, our guide for first-time solo travellers walks through the first day, and your first group holiday covers how the format works. Everything we run for people travelling on their own is gathered on our over 50s solo holidays page.
Questions people ask
I am a nervous flyer. Can I still come on a Spice holiday?
Yes. Two of our holidays leave without a flight at all, one by Eurostar from St Pancras to Ypres and one by ship from Tilbury to the Norwegian fjords. Tell us when you enquire and we will point you to the trips that start that way.
What happens if my flight is late?
Your host knows the arrival plan for the whole group and will know you are running late. On our Mediterranean cruise you fly to Rome the day before the ship sails, so a delay cannot cost you the holiday.
Will someone meet me when I land?
On several of our holidays, yes, including New Year in Puglia, where Claire and Andrea meet you at the airport. Each holiday is set up a little differently, so ask us how yours begins and we will tell you plainly.
Do I need to speak the language?
No. Your host travels with the group and looks after the arrangements, so you are never the one left to explain things at a hotel desk. On the WingsItaly holidays, Andrea grew up in Italy and does the talking.
I have not travelled for years. Should I start small?
Often that is the wisest choice. A few nights in Ypres or Paris tests your nerves without a long journey, and you come home knowing how a hosted group works. Then you can choose something longer with that behind you.
Tell us which part of the journey worries you
Tell us which bit you dread, the airport, the transfer or arriving alone, and we will tell you exactly how the holiday you like begins, who meets you and where.
