Lisbon in April: mild afternoons, river light and a hosted break with free evenings

5 October 2026 · 4 min read

April is a good month for Lisbon: afternoons average about 20°C, though rain falls on about eight days in the month. It is also when Spice Escapes goes, with A Taste of Lisbon, a hosted break in downtown Lisbon for people who book on their own, with the days suggested and the evenings left free.

Below: the April averages, where to catch the light, what is on and how the free evenings work. To go with company, see the dates and book online on the A Taste of Lisbon page: 15 Apr 2027 – 18 Apr 2027.

Afternoons of about 20°C, a jacket after dark, and about eight wet days

These are thirty-year averages for central Lisbon from IPMA, Portugal's weather institute: a typical April, not a forecast.

Afternoons average about 20°C and nights about 12°C, warm enough for lunch outside and cool enough for a layer at dinner. London's Met Office average for an April afternoon is about 14.5°C.

Rain is the catch. About 72mm falls in the month, more than in London, and about eight days bring at least a millimetre. Pack a light waterproof, and see our guide to packing light for the rest.

The month warms as it goes: March averages about 19°C in the afternoon, May about 23°C, and three or four April afternoons reach 25°C.

Where Lisbon's light is best: the river steps, the arch and two viewpoints

Visit Lisboa writes of the Tagus estuary glowing and lighting up the rooftops of the Baixa. Four places it recommends for seeing that:

  • Ribeira das Naus: an old boatyard turned river beach, with broad steps into the Tagus between Praça do Comércio and Cais do Sodré. Visit Lisboa says its kiosk and seating are there for Lisbon's light, and calls the sunset the best in the city.
  • Arco da Rua Augusta: the triumphal arch on Augusta Street, which runs down from near the hotel, with a 360-degree view of the Baixa and the river from the top.
  • Miradouro da Senhora do Monte: one of the calmest places to look at the city, with the castle to the left and the river behind the rooftops.
  • Miradouro de Santa Catarina: the livelier sunset, with music and conversation on a terrace looking over the estuary and the bridge.

What is on in April: a Banksy museum and the Gulbenkian's Scheherazade

Two shows run right through April. At the Gulbenkian's modern art centre, Scheherazade, the Never-ending Collection of CAM, threads One Thousand and One Nights through fourteen sections, open until 9pm on Saturdays. Museu Banksy Lisbon shows 100 reproductions of Banksy's work, open until 8pm every day. For festivals, check Visit Lisboa's What's On page nearer the time.

A Taste of Lisbon: days with a plan, evenings of your own

A Taste of Lisbon is 3 nights, Thursday to Sunday, from £639, hosted by Pam Harte, who travels with the group. Home is My Story Hotel Tejo, next to Figueira Square, with views of São Jorge Castle and a metro stop very close by. Airport transfers are not included, because the metro is the quickest way in.

The days come as suggestions: the old centre and its viewpoints on the Friday, Belém and its pastéis de nata on the Saturday, with a boat trip along the Tagus suggested for that afternoon.

Then the evenings. Visit Lisboa gives dinner hours as seven until ten, and the metro runs until one in the morning. The first night's suggestion is a traditional Portuguese restaurant near the hotel. Later, try the night out Visit Lisboa describes, from Bairro Alto down to Bica and on to Cais do Sodré, or a fado house for the music UNESCO lists as intangible cultural heritage.

Most people on a Spice holiday book on their own. Groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty, so there is company for dinner when you want it and an early night when you do not. A room to yourself carries a single supplement.

Not free in April? Seville in early spring, Kraków in late spring

Surprising Seville is 4 nights, 4 Mar 2027 – 8 Mar 2027, from £549, hosted by Jackie Whyte. A March afternoon there averages about 22°C on Spain's weather agency's figures, and a 48-hour hop-on hop-off bus ticket is included.

Kraków Discovery is 4 nights, 26 May 2027 – 30 May 2027, from £589, hosted by Jackie Whyte. A May afternoon there averages about 20°C on Poland's weather institute's figures, much like Lisbon in April.
