Rome before a cruise: an evening by the Pantheon, then the ship with your group
A night in Rome before a cruise is the calm way to start one: a late flight costs you an evening instead of the ship, and you get a few hours in the old centre before you sail from Civitavecchia. Spice Escapes builds that night into Mediterranean Cruising Italian Style with WingsItaly, a hosted small-group cruise that opens with a walk and an optional dinner near the Pantheon.
Here is why the day-early start matters, what one evening and a free morning can hold, and how the group reaches the port. Most people book on their own. Groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty.
Fly the day before, and the ship stops being a deadline
You leave the UK the day before the ship sails, and WingsItaly meet you at the airport and bring you to a central hotel. The Costa Toscana does not leave Civitavecchia until the evening of the second day, so a delayed plane becomes a story for dinner rather than a missed holiday.
One evening in the Pantheon district
After check-in there is time for a first stroll and a coffee, arrival times allowing, then your hosts lead an informal orientation walk. Dinner is near the Pantheon, which Rome's tourist board groups with Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori as the authentic historic centre of the city:
- The Pantheon as it stands is Hadrian's rebuilding, carried out between AD 118 and 125. Its dome is larger than St Peter's, and the oculus, almost nine metres across, is the only natural light inside.
- Piazza Navona keeps the exact outline of the Stadium of Domitian it was built on, with Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers.
- Campo de' Fiori has a market every morning from Monday to Saturday, and turns to aperitifs and outdoor dinners at dusk.
Rome in May averages a high of about 23°C and a low of about 12°C on the World Meteorological Organization's long-term figures, so pack a light layer for the walk back from dinner.
Dinner with the sisters at Palazzo Lante
The first evening ends with an optional group dinner, not included in the price, prepared by the religious sisters who run a residence in the historic Palazzo Lante, on Piazza dei Caprettari by the church of Sant'Eustachio. You walk there with the group, or take a taxi at your own cost. It is a quiet corner many visitors never see, and the table where new faces become names.
If that is how you want the cruise to begin, see the dates and book online on the holiday page. It runs 6 May 2027 – 14 May 2027, 8 nights in all, from £1,928.
Rome to Civitavecchia, together
The second morning is yours: breakfast, check-out and free time in Rome. Then the group travels together to Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, so nobody is working out the journey to the coast alone with a suitcase.
Then the ship, and an hour under the stars
The Costa Toscana is Costa's LNG-powered flagship, with interior, ocean view and balcony cabins. Calls include Savona, Marseilles and Barcelona, and after Barcelona the ship stops in dark open sea for an hour of stargazing. Your drinks package and gratuities are included, and Andrea of WingsItaly, who grew up between Rome and Sicily, hosts with Claire Dymond throughout.
A cabin to yourself carries a single supplement or room-to-yourself cost, as on every Spice Escapes holiday, and our single supplement page explains it. Other sailings are on our cruise holidays page, and more of the country on our Italy holidays page.
If you cannot make that week
Summertime Fjordland Cruise takes the flight out of the question. It sails from London Tilbury and back, calling at Eidfjord, Austefjorden for Bergen, Måløy and Geiranger, full board, 8 nights with Pam Harte. Places: 4 places left.
All Inclusive Perfect Paris keeps the boat and drops the sea: your hotel is a river ship moored a short walk from the Eiffel Tower, full board with drinks on board, 3 nights with Samantha Pike.
Questions people ask
Is one night in Rome before a cruise enough?
It is not enough to see Rome properly, but it is enough to reach the ship rested, with any flight delay behind you. You get an evening and a free morning, which covers the Pantheon and Piazza Navona at an easy pace.
How do I get from Rome to Civitavecchia?
On this holiday the group travels there together after the free morning, so there is nothing to plan. If you are flying straight to a ship instead, Rome's tourist board lists the port among its fixed taxi fares from Fiumicino Airport.
Can I go inside the Pantheon the evening I arrive?
Only if you arrive in good time, because Rome's tourist board lists it as open daily from 9am to 7pm, last entry 6.30pm, with a ticket. On a later flight, the free morning before the port is the better chance.
Will I be on my own at dinner that first night?
The first evening has an optional group dinner at Palazzo Lante, and you walk there together from the hotel. It is not included in the holiday price, and you are free to do your own thing instead.
