Ski holidays for over 50s travelling alone: five hosted weeks compared

2 October 2026 · 5 min read

Ski holidays for over 50s travelling alone work best when the hotel is close to the lift, dinner is included and there is a group to come back to. Spice Escapes runs five hosted ski weeks for people travelling on their own, in France, Italy and Spain, with no upper age limit. Below they are compared on what matters once you are there: the walk to the snow, the food, the size of the area, and the help on offer if you are less confident or coming back after years away.

Why ski with a hosted group

Skiing on your own is fine on the mountain and lonely at dinner. In a hosted group there is a table every evening, people to compare the day with, and someone who knows the resort. On the slopes you can ski with others at your pace or on your own, and nobody minds which. Most people book on their own, so you are not the only one arriving without a ski partner.

If skiing is new to you, our guide to a first ski holiday covers lessons and kit, and our solo ski holidays article explains how a hosted week runs.

Five weeks compared

For the biggest areas: Tignes and Les Arcs

Ski Tignes puts you in the area Tignes shares with Val d'Isère, more than three hundred kilometres of slopes, from gentle blue runs between the two resorts to long blues and reds down from the Grande Motte glacier. The nearest lift is under three minutes' walk from the hotel door, and breakfast and dinner are included every day, with a fireplace in the bar afterwards. It is 7 nights, 16 Jan 2027 – 23 Jan 2027, hosted by Jackie Whyte, from £1,399.

Ski Les Arcs opens up Paradiski, the area Les Arcs shares with La Plagne, with more than four hundred kilometres of pistes, most of the skiing above two thousand metres, so the snow is reliable. Hotel Les Mélèzes, in the highest of the Les Arcs villages, is seventy metres from the slopes, and it is full board, so there is no hunting for dinner after a day on the mountain. There is ski school for anyone still finding their feet. It is 7 nights, 23 Jan 2027 – 30 Jan 2027, hosted by Lauren Fawkes, from £1,509.

For tree-lined runs and Italian food: Madonna di Campiglio

Ski Madonna, the Dolomites is based at the family-run Hotel Pinzolo Dolomiti, with tree-lined pistes above Pinzolo and Madonna di Campiglio, about one hundred and fifty kilometres in all. It suits intermediates best, with good beginner areas and steeper runs for the confident. A hotel shuttle runs to the lifts each morning, and breakfast and a three-course dinner are included every day. It is 7 nights, 23 Jan 2027 – 30 Jan 2027, hosted by Jamie Morris, from £1,339. Availability today: Waitlist only. Our Italy page lists the rest of what we run there.

For the most variety: Morzine

Ski Morzine opens up the Portes du Soleil, twelve resorts and about six hundred and fifty kilometres of pistes. Morzine links straight into Les Gets and Avoriaz, and there are runs across into Switzerland. The Le Cret hotel is a walk from the Super Morzine lift, with a pool and sauna for afterwards, and evening meals are included in the hotel. It is 7 nights, 30 Jan 2027 – 6 Feb 2027, from £1,199. Availability today: 14 places left.

For guided skiing and quiet slopes: Baqueira

Ski Baqueira, the Spanish Pyrenees is the one to choose if you would like a guide. Five mornings of guided skiing are included, in groups of ten at most, across about one hundred and sixty kilometres in three linked sectors where the slopes stay uncrowded. The Tuc Blanc hotel is about eighty metres from the gondola, so you walk out in your boots. It is 7 nights, 14 Mar 2027 – 21 Mar 2027, hosted by Rob Thompson, from £1,449. More in Spain.

Which one suits you

  • Less confident, or back after years away: Baqueira, for the guided mornings, or Madonna, for the morning shuttle and the tree-lined runs.
  • As much skiing as possible: Tignes, Les Arcs or Morzine.
  • The shortest walk to the snow: Les Arcs or Baqueira.
  • Dinner sorted every night: all five include evening meals, and Les Arcs is full board.

Our ski and winter holidays page lists every departure, and our France page has three of the five.

Rooms and what they cost

Every holiday on sale charges a single supplement for a room of your own, and the figure is different on each one. We publish them all on our single rooms and supplements page, so you can see the cost before you choose. On some departures, two people sharing a twin or double room avoid it, which helps if a friend or a partner is coming with you.

Questions people ask

Can you go on a ski holiday on your own at 50 or 60?

Yes. Spice Escapes runs hosted ski weeks for people travelling on their own with no upper age limit, in France, Italy and Spain. Dinner is included every evening, so there is company at the end of each day on the mountain.

What is the best ski resort for over 50s?

The best resort for over 50s is the one that matches your confidence and how far you want to walk in ski boots. For guided skiing and quiet slopes, Spice Escapes' week in Baqueira, in the Spanish Pyrenees, includes five mornings with a guide, and its Les Arcs and Baqueira hotels are a short walk from the snow.

Do I need to be a good skier to join a group?

No. You ski at your own level, with others at the same pace or on your own, and meet the group again in the evening. Spice Escapes' Les Arcs week has ski school for beginners, and its Baqueira week includes guided mornings in groups of ten at most.

Is there a ski holiday with a guide included?

Yes. Spice Escapes' week in Baqueira, in the Spanish Pyrenees, includes five mornings of guided skiing in groups of ten at most. The hotel is about eighty metres from the gondola.

How big are the groups on a hosted ski week?

Most Spice Escapes groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. That is enough to find someone skiing at your pace, and small enough to know everyone by the second evening.

Ask us before you book

If you are not sure which resort would suit your skiing, ask. Ring or write to the office from our contact page, and choose a phone call back if you would rather talk. You can also ask Rosie, our automated assistant, in the chat on this page about dates and prices, and one of the team can pick the conversation up. Nothing is booked by asking. If this would be your first holiday with a group, our first-timers' page answers the questions people ask before they book, and our page on solo holidays for the over 50s, 60s and 70s sets out how much each kind of holiday asks of you.
