Solo cruises for seniors over 60 and 70, hosted from the first evening

2 October 2026 · 6 min read

If you are over 60, newly retired or newly on your own, and you want a cruise with company rather than a cabin and a crowd of strangers, Spice Escapes books you onto a small hosted group that sails together. You book on your own, a host from our team travels with you from the airport or the quayside, and the arranging is done before you pack.

Retirement brings a list of places you meant to see, and sometimes nobody to go with. Spice Escapes runs hosted group holidays for people in their 40s, 50s and 60s, most of whom come on their own. Our groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty, which is small enough to learn names on the first evening.

The first big trip, without doing all the organising

Cruising alone in your sixties or seventies has two hard parts, and neither of them is the sea. One is the planning. The other is walking into a dining room full of couples and choosing a table. A hosted group removes both. Your host knows the ship, gathers everyone for a welcome drink, and makes sure you have people to sit with at dinner from the start.

You still keep your own time, and the choice of company is yours. If this would be your first time away like this, our page for first-time solo travellers walks through how it works, and your first group holiday covers the rest.

Start gently: four nights in Venice, everything included

All Inclusive Treasures of Venice is the trip we would suggest to anyone testing the water. It lasts 4 nights, and the ship, MS Michelangelo, is your hotel, moored close to St Mark's Square. All meals, drinks at the bar and a gala dinner are included on board, so there is no bill to settle each evening and no sum to work out with people you have just met.

The group flies out on scheduled flights that land at similar times, waits for one another, and takes a water taxi onto Venice island together. There is an afternoon across the lagoon to Burano and its rainbow-coloured houses,. Your host is Samantha Pike, dates are 19 Nov 2026 – 23 Nov 2026 and the price is from £929. Places: Waitlist only.

No airport at all: the Norwegian fjords from London

For many people past 60 the airport is the part they dread most. Summertime Fjordland Cruise sails from London Tilbury and back, so there are no flights to catch and no luggage to haul through security. It runs for 8 nights, with calls at Eidfjord, Austefjorden for Bergen, Måløy and Geiranger. Full board, the spa, the pool and the hot tubs are all in the fare.

Ambience is a large ship, which is why a group matters. Your host is Pam Harte, so there is always a familiar face at the bar. There are generally two formal or gala nights, and the rest of the time daytime clothes are casual. Dates are 21 Aug 2027 – 29 Aug 2027, from £1,129, with places: 4 places left. More on the country is on our Norway page.

The once-in-a-retirement one: Kolkata and the Lower Ganges

India: Kolkata & The Lower Ganges River Cruise is the trip people save for. It is a Spice Escapes exclusive charter on the RV Kalaw Pandaw, a teak and brass river boat with just 18 staterooms, so you are never lost in a crowd. You are met on arrival in Kolkata and taken by private transfer to the boat, where a welcome reception is waiting.

Days include a rickshaw ride at Kalna to a Shiva temple ringed by 108 shrines, and a private visit to Raj Bhavan arranged for Spice Escapes guests only. The pace is kind: on the morning of the early flower market visit, guests who prefer to rest can stay aboard. An all-inclusive drinks package is part of the cruise. The holiday runs for several nights with one of our hosts as host, on dates to be confirmed, from price on request. Places: ask us. See also India.

A big Italian ship, with two hosts beside you

Mediterranean Cruising Italian Style with WingsItaly suits anyone who has worried about missing a ship because of a late flight. You fly to Rome a day early and are met at the airport, then a hosted orientation walk eases you into the city. On the first evening there is an optional dinner prepared by the sisters at Palazzo Lante, near the Pantheon.

On board Costa Toscana, Andrea Moro of WingsItaly and Claire Dymond host throughout, and drinks and gratuities are included. You choose an interior, ocean view or balcony cabin. It runs for 8 nights, on 6 May 2027 – 14 May 2027, from £1,928, and places: 11 places left. Our Italy page has more.

Over 70, or slower on your feet? Ask these first

Seniors over 70 often ask us the same practical things, and they are the right questions. How much walking is there on an average day? Is a port reached by tender, a small boat from ship to shore, as Geiranger is on the fjords sailing? Can I sit out an excursion without spoiling anyone's plans? Every one of these trips has optional parts, and the host will tell you honestly which days are gentle and which are long.

  • Shortest and simplest: Venice, with the ship moored in the city.
  • No flying: the fjords, from Tilbury and back.
  • Most rest built in: the Lower Ganges, on a small boat with a slow pace.
  • Most going on: the Mediterranean, on a large ship with two hosts.

Paying for a cabin of your own

Every Spice Escapes holiday carries a single supplement or a cost for having a room to yourself, and we would rather say so plainly than have it surprise you at the booking stage. How much it is depends on the ship and the cabin, so ask us for the figure on the sailing you like. Our single supplement page explains how it works. If you are weighing up other kinds of trip too, see our holidays for over 50s travelling solo and group holidays for people travelling on their own.

Questions people ask

Am I too old for a group cruise at 70?

No, as long as you are comfortable with the walking each trip involves. Tell us what you can and cannot manage, and we will point you to the sailing that fits. The host is there to help on the day as well.

I have been widowed. Will I be the only one on my own?

Most people who travel with Spice Escapes book on their own, so it would be unusual to be the only one. The host makes introductions on the first evening and keeps an eye out so that nobody is left on the edge of things.

Do I have to share a cabin?

You can have a cabin to yourself, which carries a single supplement. Ask us what that costs on the sailing you want, because it varies by ship and cabin. We will give you the figure before you commit.

What if I want time to myself?

Take it. Nobody is marched from one activity to the next, and optional excursions are optional. The group is there when you want company.

Are these holidays financially protected?

Spice Escapes holds ATOL licence 9046, which covers our flight-inclusive holidays. Ask us how a particular trip is protected, especially one sailing from a UK port. We will explain it in plain terms.

Talk to Pam before you decide

The easiest first step is a conversation with someone who has done it. Pam Harte hosts the fjords sailing, and she and the rest of the team can tell you who is hosting the trip you like, what a typical day looks like and how much walking is involved. Tell us which cruise has caught your eye, when you could go and what is holding you back. Send us an enquiry and we will come back to you with places, prices and an honest answer.
