Solo holidays to Italy over 50: hosted company and a room of your own

2 October 2026 · 6 min read

If you are in your fifties, travelling on your own and Italy keeps calling, a hosted small group is the easiest way to go: Spice Escapes arranges the hotel or ship, the transfers and a host who travels with you, and you keep a room of your own. You get the company of a sociable group at dinner and the freedom to wander off by yourself when you want to.

Plenty of people reach this point with a long list of Italian places and nobody free to go with them. Friends are busy, or a partner will not travel. Going alone sounds fine until you picture a table for one in a trattoria full of families. Our groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty, and most people book on their own. So the worry about being the only one without a travelling companion tends to vanish on the first evening.

Company without giving anything up

In your fifties you are confident, you know what you like and you do not want to be herded. You also do not want to spend a whole week talking only to waiters. A hosted group sits between those two things. The host knows the place, sorts the bookings and gathers everyone for a drink or a meal, and nobody minds if you skip the afternoon plan for a long lunch on your own.

Each of the four Italian holidays below works that way, and each suits a different sort of week away. If you have never been on a group holiday before, our guide for first-time solo travellers explains what happens from the airport onwards, and your first group holiday covers the rest.

Lake Como, from a hotel in the city itself

Lake Como Discovery is 5 nights at the four-star Hotel Como, ten minutes' walk from the historic centre. The ferries run from Como to Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio, so a day on the water is as easy as turning up at the pier.

This one suits the person who wants freedom with a safety net. Your host, Steve Dell, meets everyone over breakfast to talk through plans for the day, and the group gathers again in the hotel bar before dinner to swap stories. You can join a ferry party or go alone and still have people to eat with that night. The hotel has both single rooms with a single bed and double rooms for sole use, and the price reflects which you choose. Dates: 14 Oct 2026 – 19 Oct 2026. From £999. Places: Waitlist only.

Venice for a long weekend, with the meals already paid for

All Inclusive Treasures of Venice is a short break of 4 nights on the MS Michelangelo, a small river ship that carries 152 passengers and moors close to St Mark's Square. The ship is your hotel. All meals and drinks at the bar are included on board, and the last night is a gala dinner.

For someone on their own this takes away a lot of small awkward moments. There is no bill to divide, no hunting for a restaurant that will seat one, and the lounge bar is where people naturally end up after dinner. The flights land at similar times, so you wait for the group at the airport and travel across to Venice together by water taxi. One afternoon the ship crosses the lagoon to Burano and its rainbow-coloured houses. Your host is Samantha Pike. Dates: 19 Nov 2026 – 23 Nov 2026. From £929. Places: Waitlist only. We have written more about this trip in our Venice short break article.

New Year in Puglia, in a hotel that is all yours

New Year's Eve is the night many people dread most after a separation or a loss. New Year in Puglia with WingsItaly answers it with 5 nights at the four-star Hotel Tesoretto in Poggiardo, in the Salento, where the group has the hotel rooms to itself. Claire and Andrea Dal Moro of WingsItaly meet you at the airport and stay with you throughout.

The week opens with a welcome aperitivo and a Puglian dinner. You visit Lecce, often called the Florence of the South, when its churches are lit up and the piazzas are full of festive markets. On New Year's Eve there is a private five-course gala with a bottle of wine each, music and dancing, while the locals hold their own celebration next door and guests drift between the two. Your host is Claire Dymond. Dates: 28 Dec 2026 – 2 Jan 2027. From £1,139. Places: 16 places left. Our page on culture and discovery holidays lists more weeks like this.

Rome first, then the Mediterranean on an Italian ship

Mediterranean Cruising Italian Style with WingsItaly runs for 8 nights and starts with a night in central Rome. You fly out a day before the ship sails, so a delayed flight cannot cost you the cruise. There is a hosted orientation walk, then an optional first group dinner cooked by the sisters at Palazzo Lante, near the Pantheon, which is a gentle way to learn everyone's names.

The next day you board the Costa Toscana at Civitavecchia and sail to ports including Barcelona. After Barcelona the ship stops at sea in the dark for an hour of stargazing. Andrea, who grew up between Rome and Sicily, hosts with Claire for the whole voyage, and your drinks package and gratuities are included on board. Your host is Claire Dymond. Dates: 6 May 2027 – 14 May 2027. From £1,679. Places: 12 places left. More sailings are on our cruise holidays page.

Your own room, and what it costs

Every one of these holidays carries a single supplement or a cost for having a room to yourself. That is the honest position, and it is the price of keeping your own space at the end of a sociable day. The amount varies by hotel, ship and room type, and our single supplement page explains how it works and how to keep it down. Questions people ask

Will I be the only person there on my own?

It is very unlikely. Most people book our holidays on their own, and groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. The host makes the introductions on the first day, so you are part of the group from the start.

Do I have to share a room with a stranger?

No. You can have a room to yourself on every holiday here, and that carries a single supplement or a sole occupancy cost. Some hotels also offer twin rooms if two friends want to travel together.

What is the group usually like on these Italian trips?

Expect a mix of first-timers and people who have travelled with us many times, most of them on their own. Evenings tend to be sociable, over dinner or in the bar, while days are as busy or as quiet as you choose. Nobody is expected to join everything.

Do I need to speak any Italian?

Not at all, as your host handles the arrangements and the hotels and ships are used to British guests. A few words do go a long way in a café, though. Our article on essential Italian phrases gives you the useful ones.

Which of these suits a first trip alone?

Venice is short, with every meal on board, so it is an easy first step. Lake Como gives you more time and more freedom, with the host gathering everyone morning and evening. If the dread is a particular date, the Puglia New Year week is built for exactly that.

Talk to Claire about which Italian week suits you

Claire Dymond hosts both of the WingsItaly holidays and can tell you honestly what the group and the pace are like. Ask us anything on our contact page, or by phone, and we will help you pick the Italian week that fits you best.
