Wawel Castle Krakow: the royal rooms, the Cathedral and the tickets

5 October 2026 · 4 min read

Wawel Castle in Kraków is the Renaissance palace of the Polish kings, now a museum with a timed ticket for each exhibition, and the Cathedral next door, where they were crowned and buried, sells its own. Allow a long morning: the official timings for the main royal rooms, the Crown Treasury and the Cathedral add up to just over three hours. Spice Escapes stays around 500 metres away on Kraków Discovery, a hosted break of 4 nights with the days left open.

Below: what is inside, the tickets and the stairs, from the castle's and the Cathedral's own websites. Want company and a host at dinner as well? See the dates and book online on the Kraków Discovery page.

Four hundred years of coronations on one limestone hill

The castle's museum calls Wawel the most historically and culturally important site in Poland. In 1320 Ladislaus the Short was crowned in Wawel Cathedral, the first recorded coronation on the hill.

The palace you walk round today was commissioned by King Alexander and his brother Sigismund I the Old, its arcaded courtyard finished in about 1540. The court moved to Warsaw in about 1610, the Austrian army later held the castle as a garrison, and it has been a museum since 1930.

Inside the castle: carved heads, tapestries and the coronation sword

There is no single ticket. You choose routes, each with the castle's own timing:

  • State Rooms, about 50 minutes. In the Envoys Hall, where parliament met, 30 of the 193 heads carved for the ceiling in about 1540 still look down.
  • Royal Private Apartments, about 60 minutes. Renaissance ceilings that escaped the fires, and Brussels tapestries made for Sigismund II Augustus, 136 of the roughly 160 he owned.
  • Crown Treasury, about 40 minutes. Szczerbiec, the sword at almost every coronation from 1320 to 1764, back in its original Gothic chamber.

The Cathedral is run separately, with the royal tombs and the Sigismund Bell

Wawel Cathedral was the church of Polish kings for four hundred years, and where they were buried. Look for the Sigismund Chapel, which the Cathedral calls a jewel of Renaissance style in Central Europe, then climb the tower to the Sigismund Bell, cast in the city in 1520.

The Cathedral opens 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 12.30pm on Sundays, closing at 4pm from November to March. Its English audio guide takes about 40 minutes for the church and bell tower, and 10 for the Royal Tombs.

Castle tickets: timed entry, daily limits and zloty only

Castle tickets go on sale online a month ahead and can still be bought online on the day. Daily limits apply and the entry time on your ticket must be kept, so buy before you set out. The combined Castle ticket covers the State Rooms and the Royal Private Apartments, with an audio guide included.

The main routes open Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 5pm, on the castle's current listing. Pay in zloty or by card, and leave the day bag at the hotel: backpacks and umbrellas go to a checkroom that takes nothing bigger than hand luggage.

Kraków Discovery: a hotel 500 metres from Wawel, and the days your own

Kraków Discovery is 4 nights at the Best Western Plus Kraków Old Town, a restored 19th-century townhouse a few steps from the Main Market Square and around 500 metres from Wawel Castle.

Jackie Whyte hosts all four nights, so there is company at dinner after a morning among the tapestries. Optional trips to the Wieliczka Salt Mine and Auschwitz-Birkenau are offered on other days, with limited places, so add them when you book. Dates: 26 May 2027 – 30 May 2027, from £589.

Most people book on their own. Groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. Every holiday carries a single supplement or room-to-yourself cost. New to this? Read first-time solo travellers, or browse over-50s solo holidays, Poland and our culture and discovery holidays.

Royal history elsewhere: a castle view in Lisbon, Museum Island in Berlin

A Taste of Lisbon is 3 nights hosted by Pam Harte, at a hotel with views of São Jorge Castle. Dates: 15 Apr 2027 – 18 Apr 2027, from £639.

Berlin Bound is 3 nights by Alexanderplatz, a short walk from Museum Island, with a coordinator leading one day. Dates: 4 Jun 2027 – 7 Jun 2027, from £549.

Questions people ask

Is Wawel Castle free to visit?

Not as a rule, because each exhibition has its own ticket. The castle's current listing has free Monday tickets to selected exhibitions from October to December, from the ticket windows only and while they last.

Is Wawel Cathedral included in the castle ticket?

No. The castle does not sell Cathedral tickets, and the Cathedral's own ticket covers the Sigismund Bell, the Royal Tombs and the Cathedral Museum. It closes to visitors on Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Can I see Wawel if stairs are hard for me?

Mostly, yes. Both floors of royal rooms can be reached by lift, with platforms over the steps. The seasonal extras are harder: the viewing platform is 100 steps up and the Dragon's Den 135 steep spiral steps down.

Will I be on my own at Wawel on Kraków Discovery?

The days are left open, so you can go on your own, with others from the group, or not at all. Jackie Whyte hosts all four nights, so there is company at dinner either way.
