Wieliczka Salt Mine: the chapel carved in salt, the steps and the trip from Kraków

5 October 2026 · 4 min read

The Wieliczka Salt Mine, 10 km south-east of Kraków, was worked for more than 700 years. A guided walk takes you 135 metres down, past saline lakes and chambers carved in salt, St Kinga's Chapel among them. Allow about two hours underground, or three with the museum, for about 800 steps and a lift back up. Spice Escapes offers it as an optional trip on Kraków Discovery, a hosted break of 4 nights for people who book on their own.

Below: the chapel, the steps and how to get there. If you would rather have company and the break arranged, see the dates and book online on the Kraków Discovery page.

Seven centuries of salt, and about 2% of it open to visitors

The mine's own history says rock salt was found by chance in the 13th century while a brine well was being dug, and the first shaft went down later that century. It grew to nine levels and 245 km of galleries, 327 metres at its deepest.

Rock salt mining stopped in 1964, and the mine was on UNESCO's first World Heritage List in 1978. Visitors see only about 2% of it.

St Kinga's Chapel: a church in salt, 101 metres down

On the way you pass saline lakes, great timber supports, salt sculptures and old mining tools and machines. The high point is St Kinga's Chapel, which the mine calls the most exceptional chamber on the route.

Its salt sculptures and reliefs were made by miners working underground, and crystal chandeliers hang over a floor of salt. The chamber is 11 metres high, holds up to 400 guests, and can still be booked for Mass or a classical concert once the day's visitors have gone.

How long it takes and how many steps: two hours, 800 steps, one lift

The Tourist Route is a walk of about two hours and 3.5 km. The ticket also covers the underground exhibition of the Cracow Saltworks Museum, which takes the visit to about three hours.

Of the roughly 800 steps, 380 come at the start, on the way down the Daniłowicz Shaft, and everyone leaves by lift. The mine says no special fitness is needed, but asks you to be realistic about your own capabilities.

  • Only a small bag is allowed, up to 20 by 20 by 35 cm.
  • Photographs are allowed, for private use.
  • You can eat underground: Karczma Górnicza, 125 metres down, serves Polish food.

From Kraków by train or bus 304, then a mine guide underground

You do not need a tour company to reach it. Trains run from Kraków Główny to Wieliczka Rynek Kopalnia, a few minutes' walk from the mine, and bus 304 leaves from the Dworzec Główny Zachód stop near the Galeria Krakowska.

Underground, every visit is led by one of the mine's trained guides, and English tours run at set times. Buy tickets on the mine's website, because the ticket office at the Daniłowicz Shaft sells only what is left.

On Kraków Discovery, the salt mine is an optional trip you add when you book

Kraków Discovery is 4 nights with the days left open. The salt mine has a day of its own as an optional trip of about four hours, with Schindler's Factory Museum and Auschwitz-Birkenau offered on other days.

Jackie Whyte hosts the whole break, so there is company at dinner however you spend the day. The group stays at the Best Western Plus Kraków Old Town, a restored 19th-century townhouse a few steps from the Main Market Square.

Optional trips have limited places, so book them with the holiday. For what the trip includes, ask Rosie, the chat on the holiday page. Dates: 26 May 2027 – 30 May 2027, from £589.

Most people book on their own. Groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. Every holiday carries a single supplement or room-to-yourself cost.

If this is new to you, start with our guide for first-time solo travellers. There is more in over-50s solo holidays, Poland and Culture and Discovery holidays.

Berlin or Lisbon, if the Kraków dates do not fit

Berlin Bound is 3 nights by Alexanderplatz, a short walk from Museum Island, with a coordinator leading one day round the city. Dates: 4 Jun 2027 – 7 Jun 2027, from £549.

A Taste of Lisbon is 3 nights hosted by Pam Harte, with Alfama and Tram 28 suggested one day and Belém and pastéis de nata the next. Dates: 15 Apr 2027 – 18 Apr 2027, from £639.

Questions people ask

Is the Wieliczka Salt Mine worth it?

Yes, if you are happy with about 800 steps and two hours underground. It was on UNESCO's first World Heritage List, and St Kinga's Chapel has salt sculptures made by the miners. If enclosed spaces bother you, the mine says claustrophobia may be a reason not to go.

Can you visit Wieliczka from Kraków without a tour?

Yes. The train or bus 304 covers the 10 km from the city centre, and the mine's own guides lead every visit underground, so a tour company is optional.

Is it cold in the salt mine?

Not very. The mine says it is around 17 to 18°C underground, so layers and comfortable shoes are enough.

Do I need to book the salt mine trip before I travel?

On Kraków Discovery, yes. The optional trips have limited places and are booked with a name against each one, so add them when you book the holiday.

Next step: choose your Kraków dates and add the salt mine

For the Wieliczka Salt Mine with company, and a host at dinner afterwards, see the dates and book online on the Kraków Discovery page and add the optional trip as you book. Places today: 9 places left.

Questions before booking can go to Jackie Whyte, who hosts the holiday, through our contact page, or to Rosie, the chat on the holiday page.
