Places available Discover Sardinia with WalkWise International
A first for Spice Escpaes and WalkWise International as we head to the Italian island of Sardinia for our Spring walking week. Sardinia is the second largest Mediterranean island and a walker’s paradise being off the beaten-track. The southwest, where we ae basing ourselves for this trip, comprises two great mountain ranges cloaked in dense oak woodlands, the Iglesiente and Sulcis. Famous for its old mines of silver, copper, zinc and coal too today it is a landscape of tremendous scenic splendour with good trails snaking through the hills and stunning panoramic vistas. We’ll be staying in Lu’ Hotel which is a lovely modern 4 star hotel, located at the entrance to the town of Carbonia, locally rich in history and culture and offering stunning landscapes and coasts, white sandy beaches, clear-crystal water, where nature is still wild and will excite us all with its varied walking.

Where you'll go
Impressive Walking:
During the week we’ll concentrate on getting the most from the local area with visits to old hidden temples, tucked away in the middle of nowhere. We’ll see the evidence of the old mines popping up where seams allowed. Then there will be visits to the fantastic cliffs and along white sandy beaches on the coast and maybe even a trip on to an island off the island itself.
Each day there will be a minimum of two walks. A moderate one of 8 miles up to 1,500ft elevation and harder one around 10-12 miles and up to 3,000ft elevtion (some walks may require a good head for heights).
For insurance purposes the maximum walking height is less than 1,500m (Max 1,236m).

Before you travel
Weather when you go
March in Sardinia marks the start of spring, bringing mild but sometimes unpredictable weather and is great for exploring the island before the peak tourist season. With daytime highs averaging 15°C and night time lows of 7°C, you can expect around 6 hours of daily sunshine so you should pack layers and be prepared for a spring walk in the UK.
Passport validity
For UK passport holders your passport must be:
- issued less than 10 years before the day you enter (check the "date of issue")
- valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the "expiry date")
• Issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’) • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’) • You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.
Entry rules for EU travel — EES, ETIAS and your GHIC
EU Entry/Exit System (EES)
The Entry/Exit System (EES) is being introduced gradually across the external borders of the European countries that use it, including the collection of biometric data such as a facial image and fingerprints. Passports continue to be stamped as usual in the meantime.
Further information: travel-europe.europa.eu/ees
ETIAS
UK citizens will eventually need a travel authorisation (ETIAS) to enter the European countries that require it for short stays. It is linked to your passport and valid for up to three years. There is no confirmed start date yet — we will let everyone know when it is required and how to apply.
Global Health Insurance Card
A UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), or a still-valid EHIC, gives you the right to access state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in the EU. It is not a replacement for travel insurance.
Travel insurance
Please ensure that you have adequate personal travel insurance to suit your requirements in place before you travel. EU Entry/Exit System (EES) From 10 April 2026, the EES was fully operational at all external border crossing points of the European countries using the system. The Entry/Exit System (EES) is an automated IT system implemented by the European Union to register non-EU travelers for short stays. It replaces manual passport stamping with digital biometric scans (fingerprints and photos) for entry/exit at Schengen area borders, enhancing security and tracking overstayers.Further information on the EES can be found on the following link - https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees/ltr ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) Starting in end 2026 UK citizens are required to have a travel authorisation to enter 30 European countries for a short stay. ETIAS travel authorisation is linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new ETIAS travel authorisation. With a valid ETIAS travel authorisation, you can enter the territory of these European countries as often as you want for short-term stays - normally for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. However, it does not guarantee entry. When you arrive, a border guard will ask to see your passport and other documents and verify that you meet the entry conditions. NB - There is no official date for the ETIAS currently confirmed but when it is introduced it will be your responsibility to ensure that you have arranged this. We will update everyone when the ETIAS is required with information on how to apply for this online. Global Health Insurance Card A UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) gives you the right to access state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in the European Union (EU). UK-issued European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) are still valid and offer the same cover as GHICs in the EU. Once your EHIC has expired, you’ll be able to replace it with a GHIC. NB – A GHIC/EHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance! The latest FCO travel guidance for Italy - https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/italy
Who else is going

Everything else
Remember there will always be 2 walks to choose from each day, you can either take it moderate with walks of between something like 8-10 miles or push yourself a little, doing 10-13 miles (some hard walks require a good head for heights).
Before you book
Will I be the only one on my own?
No. Almost everyone books on their own — that is the whole point of the trip. Nobody has to pair up and nobody sits on their own at dinner unless they want to.
Do I have to share a room?
Only if you want to. Sharing a twin with another solo traveller of the same sex costs nothing extra, and it is how most people keep the price down. If you would rather have a room to yourself, you can — see the single-room price on the trip you are looking at.
Is there a single supplement?
There is a charge for a room of your own and it varies a great deal by trip, so the honest answer is the figure on the holiday you are looking at rather than an average. What there is not is any obligation to pay it: sharing a twin with another solo traveller of the same sex costs nothing extra, and it is a genuine option rather than a token one.
Every holiday with a single room available, and what each one costs, is listed on single rooms and single supplements.
How big is the group?
Small enough to learn everyone’s name in the first day or two. Group sizes vary by trip and are listed on each holiday.
What does the host actually do?
Your host is there to make your holiday feel easy, welcoming and fun. They travel with the group throughout the trip, help everyone get to know each other, keep things running smoothly and are there if you need anything along the way.
They’re not a traditional holiday rep — they’re part of the group, sharing the experience with you and helping make sure nobody feels left out.
Is my money protected?
Yes. Payments are held in a bonded trust account and the holidays are ATOL protected under licence 9046.
What age are the other travellers?
It varies by trip. Most groups span a wide range of ages with a shared interest in the destination rather than a shared birth year.
Is there a minimum age?
Yes — 18. Spice Escapes holidays are adults only.
Most people who travel with us are in their forties and beyond, but that is who books rather than a rule. There is no upper age limit, and two people travelling together do not need to be a similar age: a daughter in her thirties travelling with her mother in her sixties is an ordinary booking.
