Walking holidays for solo travellers over 50, guided and hosted

2 October 2026 · 5 min read

The best walking holidays for solo travellers over 50 let you choose your distance each day and come back to company in the evening. Spice Escapes runs guided walking weeks for people travelling on their own, with no upper age limit, on the Amalfi Coast, in southern Sardinia and in Cantabria, in the north of Spain. On two of them there are two routes every day, an easier one and a harder one, and the group comes back together in the evening. Here is how hard each week is, what it includes and what it costs today.

How hard are they?

Each holiday page gives the distances, and they differ a good deal. The two WalkWise weeks, on the Amalfi Coast and in Sardinia, have a moderate walk and a harder one every day. The moderate walks are about eight to ten miles, and the harder ones are ten miles or more, often with twice the climbing, and a few need a good head for heights. The Cantabrian week is gentler, with example routes from under three miles to nearly nine.

If you are not sure, start with the gentler week, or pick the moderate route each day and see how you feel. Nobody has to walk every day.

The Amalfi Coast and Capri

Walking Week on Italy's Sorrento Peninsula and Amalfi Coast is led by professional guides from WalkWise. There are five guided walks, including the old Path of the Gods out to Positano, and a ferry across to Capri is planned into the week. If you have had enough, a public bus brings you back. Breakfasts, most evening meals and five picnic lunches are included. It is several nights, dates to be confirmed, hosted by one of our hosts, from price on request. Availability today: ask us.

Southern Sardinia

Southern Sardinia Sun and Sea Walking Week is also guided by WalkWise, with five walks to old temples tucked away inland and the remains of the island's mines, and again a moderate route and a harder one each day. Water and wine come with the accommodation, and breakfasts and picnic lunches on the walking days are included. It is 7 nights, 11 Mar 2027 – 18 Mar 2027, hosted by Andrew Casey, from £1,259. Our Italy page lists everything else we run there.

Cantabria, at a sociable pace

Cantabrian Walking Week in northern Spain is led by its hosts, who walked the area themselves to choose the routes: coastal paths, rivers and forest. You stay in a large house with every meal included, and local wine and beer to help yourself to. The walking is balanced with sightseeing, and you get about by minibus. It is 7 nights, 9 May 2027 – 16 May 2027, hosted by Jen & Jim, from £999.

Walking on your own, with a group

A guided group takes away the two worries of walking alone abroad: losing the path, and having nobody to talk to once the walking is done. Guides or hosts know the routes, you walk with the people who chose the same distance, and the evenings are shared. You can still skip a day and spend it in a café by the sea. Most people book on their own, and the walking weeks draw men and women alike. Our walking holidays page lists every walking week we run.

What to bring

Bring boots or walking shoes you have already worn in, a small rucksack for the day, a water bottle, a waterproof and sun cream. Walking poles help on steep descents. If you are unsure what a particular week needs, ask us before you pack.

Rooms and what they cost

Every holiday on sale charges a single supplement for a room of your own, and the figure is different on each one. We publish them all on our single rooms and supplements page, so you can see the cost before you choose. On some departures, two people sharing a twin or double room avoid it, which helps if a friend or a partner is walking with you.

Questions people ask

Are there walking holidays for people over 50 travelling alone?

Yes. Spice Escapes runs guided walking weeks for people travelling on their own, with no upper age limit, on the Amalfi Coast, in southern Sardinia and in northern Spain. You join a small group, choose your route each day and share the evenings.

How fit do I need to be for a walking holiday?

It depends on the week. On Spice Escapes' WalkWise weeks you choose each day between a moderate walk of about eight to ten miles and a harder one of ten miles or more, and the Cantabrian week has gentler routes from under three miles.

Can I go on a walking holiday on my own?

Yes, and a guided group is the easiest way to do it. With Spice Escapes you book one place, guides or hosts lead the walks, and you eat with the group in the evening.

Do men go on the walking holidays too?

Yes. Men and women travelling on their own both book Spice Escapes' walking weeks, and walking is one of the holidays that draws the most men.

How big are the walking groups?

Most Spice Escapes groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. On the WalkWise weeks the group splits between the two routes each day, so you walk with the people going at your pace.

Ask us before you book

If you are not sure which week would suit your walking, ask. Ring or write to the office from our contact page, and choose a phone call back if you would rather talk. You can also ask Rosie, our automated assistant, in the chat on this page about dates and prices, and one of the team can pick the conversation up. Nothing is booked by asking. If this would be your first holiday with a group, our first-timers' page answers the questions people ask before they book, and our page on solo holidays for the over 50s, 60s and 70s sets out how much each kind of holiday asks of you.
