City breaks for singles over 50, with a host and a small group

2 October 2026 · 6 min read

The best city breaks for singles over 50 give you a proper city, a room of your own and people to share it with, and that is exactly what Spice Escapes sets up. We run short hosted city breaks to places such as Prague, Seville, Lisbon, Athens and Kraków, where a Spice Escapes host travels with a small group and most people have booked on their own, just like you.

By your fifties you usually know what you want from a city. You want the cathedral and the old square, a long lunch, an evening drink somewhere with a view, and the freedom to skip the museum if your feet have had enough. What you may not want is to do all of it in silence, or to sit down to dinner on night one wondering whether a table for one looks as obvious as it feels. A hosted city break solves the evening without taking over the day.

Why a city is easier with a group behind you

Cities are good for people on their own in the daytime. The awkward parts come at the edges: getting from the airport, finding somewhere to eat, and the hour after dinner when everyone else seems to be in pairs. On our trips those edges are covered. The host is there from the start, people tend to drift into the bar or out to a restaurant together, and you can say yes or no to any of it.

Groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. That is enough for a few conversations at dinner and few enough to know names by the second morning. Most people come alone, so the fear of being the only single person in a room of couples does not really apply here. If you want to read more about how the group side works before choosing a city, our guide to solo holidays for over 50s covers it in detail, and first time solo travellers walks through the very first trip.

Prague over Christmas, with the markets on the doorstep

Prague Christmas Magic is 3 nights in the Old Town, departing 4 Dec 2026 – 7 Dec 2026, from £675. Your host is Sally Wiltshire, who is with the group for all three nights.

The hotel is Hotel Rott on the Little Square, steps from the Old Town Square Christmas market, so the walk back after a mug of svařák is short. The plan is gentle: the market, the Astronomical Clock and Charles Bridge on the first full day, Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral the next morning, then Malá Strana in the afternoon and the quieter markets at Wenceslas Square or Peace Square in the evening. A Christmas market is built for wandering with someone, and with a group you have people to share it with. Places left: 7 places left.

Seville, for someone who wants the sights without the rush

Surprising Seville is 4 nights, departing 4 Mar 2027 – 8 Mar 2027, from £549, hosted by Jackie Whyte.

The trip goes in the spring, before the summer heat, and a 48-hour hop-on hop-off bus ticket is included so you can see the city first and decide where to spend your energy. Hotel América is a few minutes from the cathedral and the Barrio de Santa Cruz, with tapas bars all round it. The extras are there only if you want them: a guided visit to the Cathedral, the Alcázar and the Giralda, a Segway tour, or flamenco at Tablao El Arenal. Places left: 24 places left.

Lisbon, three nights with your evenings free

A Taste of Lisbon is 3 nights, departing 15 Apr 2027 – 18 Apr 2027, from £639, hosted by Pam Harte.

This is the one for people who like to set their own pace. The suggestions are Alfama, Rossio Square and Tram 28 on one day, Belém with the Jerónimos Monastery and a pastel de nata on the next, and the evenings are yours, whether that means a quiet dinner or Bairro Alto. Airport transfers are not part of this trip because the metro is the quickest way in and there is a stop very close to My Story Hotel Tejo. Places left: 8 places left.

Athens, starting with dinner together

Ancient Athens is 4 nights, departing 10 Mar 2027 – 14 Mar 2027, from £579, hosted by Jackie Whyte.

If the first evening is the part you dread, this trip deals with it on day one: the group walks to a local restaurant to get to know each other. After that you choose. There is an optional private city tour with a licensed guide taking in the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora, an optional food tour with more than eighteen tastings from koulouri to gigantes, and an optional afternoon out to the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. The hotel, the Acropolis Select or similar, is about a five-minute stroll from the Acropolis and the Plaka. Places left: 16 places left.

Kraków, for a city with some weight to it

Kraków Discovery is 4 nights, departing 26 May 2027 – 30 May 2027, from £589, hosted by Jackie Whyte.

Days are left open, with Main Market Square and Wawel Castle at your own pace from the Best Western Plus Kraków Old Town, a few steps from the square. The optional trips are the Wieliczka Salt Mine and a full day at Auschwitz-Birkenau. That second visit has a heavy emotional effect on people, and it is easier to sit with afterwards over dinner with a group and a host than alone in a hotel room. Optional trips need booking with your name when you book the holiday. Places left: 10 places left.

Your own room, and what it costs

Every room on these trips is yours, and every holiday carries a single supplement or a cost for having a room to yourself. We show it plainly on each holiday rather than hiding it, and our page on the single supplement explains how it is worked out.

Questions people ask

Will I be the only person there on my own?

Very unlikely. Most people on Spice Escapes holidays book on their own, so arriving alone is the normal way to join a group.

Do I have to do everything with the group?

No. City breaks leave plenty of free time, and optional trips are exactly that. Plenty of people spend a morning on their own and meet up again for dinner.

What does the host actually do on a city break?

The host travels with the group, knows who everyone is from the start and is the person you go to if something is not right. They also help the social side along, so nobody is left wondering where everyone has gone for dinner.

Is a short city break long enough to get to know people?

Yes, because a city break is concentrated. You share breakfasts, a few dinners and the odd drink, and by the last day most people are swapping numbers.

How fit do I need to be?

You need to be happy walking for a good part of the day, often on cobbles and sometimes up hills. You set your own pace on the free days, and the host can tell you how much walking a particular trip involves.

Ask us what the group is like

If the question in your head is who else will be there, ask it. Jackie Whyte, who hosts our Seville, Athens and Kraków trips, and the rest of the team will tell you how a departure is shaping up, how many places are left and which city suits the way you like to travel. Send us an enquiry and we will come back to you with dates and places.
