Crete in October: warm days, a swimmable sea and a hosted week with dinner included

5 October 2026 · 4 min read

Crete in October is warm without being hot, averaging 23.4°C by day and 16.5°C at night in Heraklion, with a sea still warm enough to swim. Spice Escapes runs a hosted week on the island at this time of year for people who travel on their own and want late sun without the summer heat.

That week is Crete Discovery: three nights in Agios Nikolaos in the east, four in Rethymno further west, breakfast and dinner included throughout, and a host who travels with the group. This page covers the weather, the sea, what is still open and how the week runs.

October averages 23°C by day and 16.5°C at night

Those Heraklion figures are the official monthly averages of Greece's national weather service, published by the World Meteorological Organization. Souda, near Chania in the west, is almost the same at 23.3°C and 15.3°C.

They are averages, never a promise. A warm spell can push higher, and a grey day can feel cool.

About five degrees cooler than July and August

Incredible Crete, the Region of Crete's own tourism site, says summer averages about 25 to 30°C and can reach 40°C. In Heraklion, July and August average highs above 28°C and nights above 21°C. October takes about five degrees off both.

That matters on a week spent out and about: the harbour at Chania, Preveli Monastery, Rethymno's old town. At 23°C you can walk all afternoon and still want a swim before dinner.

The sea is still warm, and both hotels are near a beach

Spice's own weather notes for this holiday put the sea at around 22 to 24°C in October, which they call still very pleasant for swimming. Both hotels also have two pools.

The Miramare, the first hotel, has easy access to several small beaches. Incredible Crete lists a small pebble beach at Gargadoros, where the hotel stands, a kilometre south of Agios Nikolaos. The second, the Theartemis Palace, is near Rethymno Beach, an organised sandy beach that Incredible Crete says runs for more than 20 kilometres east of the town.

Crete Discovery is 7 nights, 5 Oct 2027 – 12 Oct 2027, from £1,499. See the dates and book online.

Spinalonga is still open, and Knossos is on the way west

The Ministry of Culture lists Spinalonga, the island fortress off Plaka, as open daily until the end of October, weather and boats permitting. The group stops at Plaka on day two, and the short boat ride across is offered if you wish, though it is not included.

On day four the group stops in Heraklion for its market and Archaeological Museum, and you can visit the Minoan palace of Knossos if you wish. Incredible Crete notes that the frescoes at Knossos are copies, and the originals are in that museum.

Two bases, half board and a host who does the arranging

You unpack twice, not every night. Three nights at the 4-star Miramare Hotel and Spa, or similar, looking over Mirabello Bay, then four at the 4-star Theartemis Palace, an easy seaside stroll from Rethymno's old town. Both have a spa.

  • Days one to three: Agios Nikolaos, Plaka, lunch by the sea in Elounda, and a home-cooked lunch at a family taverna on the Lasithi Plateau.
  • Day four: Heraklion, and Knossos if you wish, on the way to Rethymno.
  • Days five to seven: Chania, then Spili, Preveli Monastery and time by the sea at Plakias, then free time in Rethymno.

Half board counts for more when you travel on your own. Dinner is sorted every evening, with no hunting for a table for one. Your host is Lauren Fawkes. Groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty.

Cannot make that week? Two spring trips away from the summer heat

Croatian Chillout is a spring week on the island of Lošinj with Jackie Whyte, half board at Hotel Punta and a boat day round the archipelago offered. Dates: 1 May 2027 – 8 May 2027.

Ancient Athens is 4 nights with Jackie Whyte, timed to miss the summer heat and crowds, starting with dinner together at a local restaurant. Dates: 10 Mar 2027 – 14 Mar 2027. More ideas: autumn holiday destinations.

Questions people ask

Is Crete warm enough to swim in October?

For most people, yes. Spice's weather notes put the sea at around 22 to 24°C, and both hotels have pools too. Some beaches near Agios Nikolaos are pebbly, so water shoes help.

Does it rain in Crete in October?

Sometimes. Heraklion averages 7.8 rain days in October against fewer than one in July, and Greece's national weather service dates the start of its wetter season to the middle of the month. The service adds that rain in Greece rarely lasts many days at a time, and that autumn in southern Greece is long and warm.

Is the east or the west of Crete warmer?

Incredible Crete says the east is generally warmer than the west, the south warmer than the north, and the mountains cooler. Crete Discovery starts in the east at Agios Nikolaos and ends in Rethymno, further west.

Will I pay a single supplement on Crete Discovery?

Yes. Every Spice Escapes holiday carries a single supplement or room-to-yourself cost, and our single supplement page explains it.
