Cruises for solo travellers over 50 and 60, with a host and a small group

2 October 2026 · 5 min read

Cruises for solo travellers over 50 and 60 work best when somebody else has made the introductions. Spice Escapes hosts small groups of people travelling on their own, with no upper age limit, on four cruises, from a fjord sailing that leaves London Tilbury to a wooden boat in the Maldives. A host travels with the group, there is company at dinner if you want it, and the ship does the moving while you unpack once. Below is each sailing, what it includes and what it costs today, and every one is also on our cruises for solo travellers page.

Why a hosted cruise suits people on their own

A big ship can be a lonely place on your own. The bars are full of couples and families, and the dining room seats you wherever there is a gap. Joining a hosted group changes that. You meet the others at the start, the host knows everyone by name by the first evening, and there is always a table to join. Time to yourself is just as easy: the spa, a deck chair and a book are there whenever you want them.

Most of our groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. Most people book on their own, so nobody arrives as part of a couple they already know.

A cruise with no flight

Summertime Fjordland Cruise sails from London Tilbury and back, so there is no airport at either end. It is 8 nights on the ship Ambience, calling at Eidfjord, Austefjorden for Bergen, Måløy and Geiranger in the Norwegian fjords. Full board, the spa, the pool and the hot tubs are all included, and porters carry your luggage between the port and your cabin. It runs 21 Aug 2027 – 29 Aug 2027, hosted by Pam Harte, from £1,129 for a place in a shared cabin. Availability today: 2 places left.

A short first cruise: Venice on a small ship

All Inclusive Treasures of Venice is 4 nights on MS Michelangelo, a ship of about a hundred and fifty passengers that moors close to St Mark's Square. All meals, drinks at the bar and a gala dinner are included, and an afternoon across the lagoon to Burano and its painted houses is part of the plan. If you are not sure a week at sea is for you, this is a good way to find out. It runs 19 Nov 2026 – 23 Nov 2026, hosted by Samantha Pike, from £929. Availability today: Waitlist only.

Italy at sea, with a night in Rome first

Mediterranean Cruising Italian Style starts with a night in a Rome hotel, so a delayed flight cannot cost you the ship. Costa Toscana then calls at Savona, Marseille, Barcelona, La Goulette for Tunis, and Palermo. Full board, a drinks package and gratuities are included on board, and the WingsItaly team host the group throughout, with an optional first dinner near the Pantheon. It is 8 nights in all, 6 May 2027 – 14 May 2027, hosted by Claire Dymond, from £1,679. Our Italy page lists everything else we run there.

Further afield: the Maldives

Maldives Wildlife Cruise and Beach Chillout spends a week on MV Felicity, a wooden boat that takes twelve guests at most, then three nights on the island of Fulhadhoo with nothing scheduled. A whole day goes to looking for whale sharks off Dhigurah, and there is snorkelling with turtles, reef sharks and rays. It is 12 nights, 27 Nov 2027 – 9 Dec 2027, hosted by Jonathan Banks, from £4,199. Our Maldives page has the details.

Cabins, and what a cabin of your own costs

Every holiday on sale charges a single supplement for a room or cabin of your own, and the figure is different on each one. On a ship it can add a good deal, so we publish every figure on our single rooms and supplements page, and you can see the cost before you choose. On some departures, two people sharing a twin or double cabin avoid it, which helps if a friend, a partner or a sister is coming with you.

What the host does on board

Your host is with the group from the first day to the last. They make the introductions, book the tables, sort out problems with the cruise line and know how each day ashore runs. You can join the group for every meal and every trip ashore, or for none of them. Tell the host your plans so nobody waits for you, and take the afternoon by the pool.

Questions people ask

Are cruises good for solo travellers over 50?

Yes, especially with a hosted group. You unpack once, the ship does the moving, and a host introduces you to the others on the first evening, so there is company at dinner without having to find it. Spice Escapes runs hosted cruises from London Tilbury, Rome and Venice, and on a small boat in the Maldives.

Do solo travellers pay more on a cruise?

Usually, yes, because a cabin of your own costs a single supplement. Spice Escapes publishes the supplement for every holiday on its single rooms page, and on some departures two people sharing a cabin avoid it.

Is there a cruise from the UK with no flights?

Yes. The Summertime Fjordland Cruise sails from London Tilbury to the Norwegian fjords and back, so there is no airport at either end. Spice Escapes hosts a small group on board, and full board and porterage are included.

Are there cruises for solo travellers over 60?

Yes. Spice Escapes hosts small groups of people travelling on their own on cruises with no upper age limit, from the Norwegian fjords to the Mediterranean and the Maldives. The fjord cruise sails from London Tilbury, so there is no flight, and porters carry your luggage to the cabin.

How big are the groups on a hosted cruise?

Most Spice Escapes groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty, with a host travelling with them. On the Maldives boat the whole ship takes twelve guests at most.

Ask us before you book

If you are not sure which cruise would suit you, ask. Ring or write to the office from our contact page, and choose a phone call back if you would rather talk. You can also ask Rosie, our automated assistant, in the chat on this page about dates and prices, and one of the team can pick the conversation up. Nothing is booked by asking. If this would be your first holiday with a group, our first-timers' page answers the questions people ask before they book, and our page on solo holidays for the over 50s, 60s and 70s sets out how much each kind of holiday asks of you.
