Holidays for mature solo travellers: good company, a host and one place to unpack
The best holidays for mature solo travellers bring the company with them and stay put: a small group, a host who does the organising, and one hotel to unpack in rather than a new one every night. That is how Spice Escapes, a UK tour operator, runs its hosted group holidays, where most people book on their own and the host travels with the group.
Four follow, starting with Prague Christmas Magic before Christmas. For each you will see how you get about, which meals are arranged, how much walking there is, and live dates and prices.
Around fifteen people, one base, and short hops from it
Groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. Here is how each holiday gets you around:
- Prague: a transfer from the airport to a hotel in the Old Town, then the sights on foot.
- Puglia: you are met at the airport, and the trip into Lecce is a short transfer.
- Paris: the boat is your hotel, and the included coach tour of the city lasts about two hours.
- Croatia: a long first-day transfer with a ferry crossing, then one hotel for the week.
When one appeals, open its holiday page for the day-by-day plan, see the dates and book online. New to travelling alone? Our page for first-time solo travellers covers the journey and the first evening, and our pages on solo holidays for over 50s and holidays for over 60s show the wider programme.
Prague before Christmas, on foot from the hotel door
Prague Christmas Magic is 3 nights at Hotel Rott on the Little Square, a few steps from Old Town Square and its Christmas market. Charles Bridge, the Jewish Quarter and Wenceslas Square are a short stroll away, so your room is never far off when you want a rest.
On the provisional plan, the first full day is the market and a cup of mulled wine, then Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral the next morning, with a relaxed afternoon across the river in Malá Strana. The streets are cobbled, so pack shoes with a good grip. Sally Wiltshire is with the group throughout. It departs 4 Dec 2026 – 7 Dec 2026, from £675, and availability shows 5 places left.
Puglia at New Year, in a hotel kept for the group
New Year in Puglia with WingsItaly is 5 nights in Salento. Claire Dymond and Andrea Dal Moro of WingsItaly meet you at the airport and stay with you. Spice Escapes and WingsItaly have every room at Hotel Tesoretto, a four-star hotel with a lift, two bars and a walled courtyard, five minutes' walk from the centre of Poggiardo.
The first evening opens with an aperitivo and a dinner of Puglian food and local wine. On the second day a short transfer takes you into Lecce, whose Baroque churches are built of honey-coloured local stone. On New Year's Eve the group has its own five-course gala with a bottle of wine each, while the locals celebrate in the next room and guests drift between the two.
New Year's Day brings a lazy morning and a traditional Italian lunch, and other days are still being planned as the town councils confirm their Christmas programmes. Dates: 28 Dec 2026 – 2 Jan 2027, from £1,139. Availability: 15 places left.
Paris from the Seine, with meals and drinks included
All Inclusive Perfect Paris is 3 nights on MS Botticelli, a river boat moored a short walk from the Eiffel Tower. The boat is your hotel, with full board and drinks on board, so there is no bill to settle at dinner. People arrive by Eurostar or by air and link up for the transfer, so you need not cross Paris alone on the first day.
Two guided tours are included: the city by coach for about two hours, and about three hours on foot around Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur. The afternoons are free, and the evenings bring a gala dinner and, river permitting, a night cruise past the lights. It runs 3 Feb 2027 – 6 Feb 2027, from £679, hosted by Samantha Pike. Availability: 13 places left.
A week on a Croatian island, with breakfast and dinner arranged
For a longer stay, Croatian Chillout is 7 nights on half board at Vitality Hotel Punta, next to the town of Veli Lošinj. The first day is the long one: the transfer from Pula takes about three hours, broken by a ferry crossing of around 40 minutes where you can stretch your legs and get a drink. After that, you unpack once.
The suggested days are easy to dip into: a small-boat trip round the islands with a chance of bottlenose dolphins, a walk or cycle of about 3 km to Mali Lošinj and the museum of the Apoxyomenos, an ancient bronze statue recovered from the sea, and a free day for a ferry to another island, or for swimming, reading and a long lunch. Many beaches are rocky or pebbled, so pack water shoes. Jackie Whyte hosts, departing 1 May 2027 – 8 May 2027, from £869, and availability shows 13 places left. More slow weeks are among our chillout and relaxation holidays, and our Croatia page covers the country.
Questions people ask
Is this the same as an escorted tour for seniors?
It does the same job: the arranging is done for you and a host travels with the group. Each of these four also keeps you in one hotel or on one boat throughout, and in Paris a guide leads the two included tours.
Will I have to share a room?
No. You can have a room or cabin to yourself, and every holiday carries a single supplement or room-to-yourself cost for it. Our single supplement page explains how it is worked out.
What if I cannot walk far?
The four differ, so read the day-by-day on the holiday page first. Prague Castle stands on a hill above the river and the Montmartre tour is about three hours on foot, while in Croatia every outing is a suggestion you can take or leave. Tell us how far you walk on a normal day and we will say honestly which suits you.
Will I be left on my own in the evenings?
Paris is full board and Croatia is half board, so dinner is arranged, and in Puglia the plan includes a welcome dinner, the gala and a New Year's Day lunch. In Prague the evenings are less planned, but the host is with the group and everyone stays in the same central hotel.
Is my money protected?
Spice Escapes is ATOL protected under licence 9046, which covers holidays that include flights. Each holiday page sets out what is included, so check there or ask us if you are unsure.
Choose your base, then book online
Pick the holiday whose shape suits you, open its page, see the dates and book online. For Prague before Christmas, availability shows 5 places left. Before you book, ask Rosie on the holiday page, or use our contact page and ask for Rob Thompson, who owns Spice Escapes and hosts holidays himself. He can talk you through the pace, the room and the journey.
