Holidays for singles over 80: gentle hosted trips and an honest word on pace
The best holidays for singles over 80 are the ones where you unpack once, the meals are already arranged and there is someone at the next table to talk to. Spice Escapes runs small hosted group holidays for people travelling on their own, and the gentlest of them can suit a traveller in their eighties who is still independent and wants company more than a packed itinerary.
We would rather be straight with you from the first line. Spice Escapes plans its programme for people in their 40s, 50s and 60s, and some of our holidays are busy, early starts, long walks, ski lifts. Those are not on this page. What follows is the shorter list we would give a friend in their eighties who wanted to get away but had nobody left to go with.
What changes when you travel on your own at this age
At this stage of life the worries are rarely about the place. They are small and practical, and they are what keeps a holiday from being booked:
- Airports. The queues and the long walk to the gate. Two of the holidays below involve no airport at all.
- Packing and repacking. Every holiday here keeps you in one bed, cabin or hotel room, for the whole stay.
- Dinner on your own. Eating alone in a hotel restaurant is the moment people dread most. A host travels with every group, and on most evenings there is a table you can simply join.
- Being a burden. Nobody wants to be the one the group waits for. On these holidays you can stay put by the pool or on deck while others go out.
- The cost of a room to yourself. Every holiday carries a single supplement or sole-occupancy price. Our single supplement page explains how it is worked out, and we tell you the figure before you book.
Groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. Most people book on their own, so you are not the odd one out among couples. If it is a long time since you went anywhere without a husband, wife or old friend, our page for first-time solo travellers walks through the booking, the journey and the first evening, and our wider guide to solo holidays for over 50s shows the whole programme.
No airport at all: a fjord cruise from the Thames
For many people in their eighties, Summertime Fjordland Cruise is the easiest way into a holiday abroad. It sails from London Tilbury and comes back there too, so there is no flight and no airport security. It runs for 8 nights, departing 21 Aug 2027 – 29 Aug 2027, from £1,129.
The ship calls at Eidfjord, Austefjorden for Bergen, Måløy and Geiranger, with days at sea in between. Full board, the spa, the pool and the hot tubs are all included in the fare. One honest note: Geiranger is a tender port, which means going ashore in a smaller boat, so if steps and boarding ramps are a concern you can stay on board and watch the fjord from the deck. Your host is Pam Harte, and availability shows 4 places left. Our page on solo cruises for seniors goes further, all our cruise holidays are listed together, and our Norway page covers the country.
By train, for remembrance: three nights in Ypres
For a generation that grew up with the stories of the Great War, World War I, A Journey of Memory and Meaning with Wings carries a weight that a beach does not. You take the Eurostar from St Pancras, so again there is no airport, and on arrival in Lille you are met and taken by private group transfer to Ypres.
You stay 3 nights at the Albion Hotel, a family-run hotel kept by Christiane and her daughter Ruth, with breakfast each morning. A local guide takes the group to Tyne Cot and the trenches at Sanctuary Wood, and the Last Post sounds at the Menin Gate each evening, a few minutes from the hotel. A short break suits anyone who would rather not be away a full week. Dates: 8 Apr 2027 – 11 Apr 2027. Price from £1,019. Your host is Claire Dymond, and availability shows 14 places left.
One hotel, one week, everything included: Fuerteventura
If what you want is warmth and rest in the darker months, All Inclusive Fuerteventura Winter Sun and Fun is the least demanding holiday we run. The hotel is adults only, all meals and drinks are included, and you have a four-star sea-view room with Jandía Beach below for a stroll when you fancy one.
The spa, the jacuzzi and the pools are there for the days you do nothing, and there are optional excursions to villages and markets for the days you feel like more. Nobody has to keep pace with anybody. It is 7 nights, departing 30 Jan 2027 – 6 Feb 2027, from £1,199, hosted by Steve Dell. Places: 3 places left. Our other chillout and relaxation holidays follow the same unhurried pattern.
Venice, with the ship as your hotel
All Inclusive Treasures of Venice is a short break where the ship is your hotel, moored close to St Mark's Square. All meals, drinks at the bar and a gala dinner are included on board, and there is an afternoon across the lagoon to Burano and its rainbow-coloured houses. The flights arrive at similar times, so the group crosses to the island together by water taxi.
An honest word, because it matters at this age: Venice itself is bridges and steps, and there is no getting round that on foot. The excursions are optional, so you can go out for a morning and come back to the ship for lunch. It runs for 4 nights, departing 19 Nov 2026 – 23 Nov 2026, from £929, hosted by Samantha Pike. Places: Waitlist only.
Before you book
Read the day-by-day on the holiday page and picture yourself doing it, including the walks between the sights. Check that your travel insurance covers the trip you have chosen. And pack lighter than you think, since you will manage your own case. Our tips on packing light for group travel help with that.
Questions people ask
Am I too old to go on a Spice Escapes holiday?
Our programme is planned for people in their 40s, 50s and 60s, and we say so plainly. What matters more than your age is how comfortable you are with walking, steps and your own luggage, so ring us and describe a normal day for you. We will tell you honestly which holidays fit.
Do you run coach holidays for over 80s?
No, Spice Escapes does not run coach tours. The nearest thing is the Ypres short break, where you travel by Eurostar and a private group transfer, or the fjord cruise, which sails from London Tilbury with no flight at all.
Which of your holidays involves the least walking?
The Fuerteventura week and the fjord cruise ask the least of you, because you can spend whole days at the hotel or on board. Venice is the most demanding of the gentle trips because the city is full of bridges.
Will I pay more because I am travelling alone?
A room or cabin to yourself carries a single supplement or a sole-occupancy price on every holiday. We show it before you book and our single supplement page explains how it is set.
What does the host actually do for me?
The host travels with the group, makes the introductions and makes sure there is a table to join at dinner. They are a friendly face to go to if something goes wrong, though they are not a carer or a nurse.
Talk it through before you decide
Many people in their eighties tell us the hardest part was picking up the phone. You do not have to decide anything on that first call. Tell us how you get about, what you enjoy and roughly when you would like to go, and we will suggest the holiday that suits you, or say honestly if none of them does yet.
Use our contact page and ask to speak to Rob Thompson, who owns Spice Escapes and hosts holidays himself. He will answer the questions about pace and walking that a brochure never does, so you go knowing what each day asks of you.
