Is it safe to travel alone? Safety in numbers with a host and a small group
Is it safe to travel alone? For most people heading to a European city or island, yes, and the risk that keeps them at home is usually smaller than the worry. Spice Escapes takes the part that frightens people most, being somewhere strange with nobody to turn to, off the table: you travel on your own, but you join a small hosted group, with a host who travels with you and knows the plan for every day.
The worry is rarely crime figures. It is the wrong turning after dark, or falling ill with nobody to notice you missed breakfast. Those are the moments a group and a host change.
What being in a group actually changes
Groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. Enough for someone always to be heading your way, and small enough that people notice when you are missing. Most people book on their own.
- Someone to check in with. The host is the first person to tell if you feel unwell or lose something.
- Evenings with a plan. The walk to and from dinner is the usual risky moment. Here there is a table to join and people to walk back with.
- Freedom with a safety net. Go off alone for the afternoon, knowing where everyone will be later.

Questions people ask
What happens if something goes wrong while I am away?
Your host travels with the group and is the first person to go to, whether it is a lost card, a missed meeting point or feeling unwell. The team in the UK is there behind the host.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, it is required, and Spice Escapes does not sell it, so you arrange your own. Look for medical cover abroad, repatriation and cancellation, and declare any health conditions honestly.
Is it safe for a woman to travel alone with a group?
The groups are mixed and most people come on their own. You have your own room unless you choose to share, and someone to walk back with. Our page on solo female travel in Europe covers this in more depth.
Will I be fit enough to keep up?
Walking levels differ from holiday to holiday, and nobody expects you to keep pace with anyone. Tell us how you get about and the team will advise which trip suits you.
Does having my own room cost more?
Yes, every holiday carries a cost for a room to yourself. Our single supplement page explains how it works and what you get for it.
Ask us the question that is worrying you
Use our contact page and ask for Rob Thompson, who owns Spice Escapes and hosts holidays himself. Tell him what you are nervous about and he will tell you honestly which holiday fits. You can also browse every solo holiday for over 50s first.
