Krakow in May: mild days, the Market Square and a host at dinner
Kraków in May suits a late-spring city break: on long-term WMO averages, days reach about 20°C and nights about 8°C, mild enough to spend whole days on foot, with some rain on about half of them. Spice Escapes goes then with Kraków Discovery, 4 nights a few steps from the Main Market Square with a host for every one of them.
Below are the May figures against London's, the square, and how the hosted break works. Already sure? See the dates and book online on the Kraków Discovery page.
How warm is Kraków in May? A touch warmer than London, and wetter
Thirty-year averages from Poland's Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, published by the WMO, give Kraków in May a high of 19.8°C and a low of 8.5°C. The Met Office figures for London over the same years are 18.1°C and 8.9°C, so the days are a little warmer than at home and the nights much the same.
The surprise is the rain: 81 mm in an average May, against 46 mm in Kraków's April and 45 mm in a London May. Averages are not a forecast, but pack for showers:
- A light waterproof that folds into a day bag.
- A warm layer for the evenings.
- Shoes for a day on foot. The hotel is around 500 metres from Wawel Castle and roughly 1 km from Kazimierz.
On the Main Market Square: a bugle call every hour and the florists' stalls
The square was staked out with the city charter in 1257, each side a little over 200 metres. The city's visitor site, krakow.travel, calls it the largest square of medieval Europe and still one of the largest, and the old centre was on UNESCO's first list in 1978.
The Cloth Hall stands in the middle, with the Town Hall Tower and St Mary's Basilica on the square. The same site credits the florists' stalls with adding "an indispensable dash of local colour", alongside the horse-drawn cabs and the pigeons.
Listen on the hour. The hejnał, the city's bugle call, is played from the taller of St Mary's two towers to the four sides of the globe, every hour, all day. It stops mid-note, where legend says a watchman sounding the alarm against the Tatars was struck by an arrow.
Time a visit to St Mary's for 11.50am, Monday to Saturday, when Veit Stoss's high altar, all 13 metres of it, is opened. The church's visiting hours are 11.30am to 6pm, or 2pm to 6pm on Sundays.
What is on in May: look up your week on the city's calendar
The events calendar at krakow.travel, run by the Kraków Festival Office, lists concerts and festivals by date, so check it for your week. Between sights, the same site suggests the Planty garden ring, a walk along the Vistula or the climb up the Krakus Mound.
A hosted break by the square, with company at dinner
Kraków Discovery runs 26 May 2027 – 30 May 2027, from £589. You stay at the Best Western Plus Kraków Old Town, a restored 19th-century townhouse with 92 rooms and a restaurant serving Polish and international dishes.
Jackie Whyte hosts all 4 nights, so there is company at dinner. The days are left open for the square and Wawel Castle at your own pace, and for the first evening the itinerary suggests dinner and a drink in one of the city's bars.
Optional trips are offered on separate days to Schindler's Factory Museum, the Wieliczka Salt Mine and Auschwitz-Birkenau. Places are limited and booked in a name, so add them when you book.
Most people book on their own. Groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. Every holiday carries a single supplement or room-to-yourself cost. First trip of this kind? Read first-time solo travellers, or browse over-50s solo holidays, Poland and our city breaks.
If that week will not work: a short break in Lisbon or Berlin
A Taste of Lisbon is 3 nights, 15 Apr 2027 – 18 Apr 2027, hosted by Pam Harte, from £639. The suggested days take in Alfama and Tram 28, then Belém and its pastéis de nata, and the hotel looks across to São Jorge Castle.
Berlin Bound is 3 nights by Alexanderplatz, 4 Jun 2027 – 7 Jun 2027, from £549. A coordinator leads one day and the rest is yours, and on Saturday afternoons Berliners dance tango outdoors in Monbijoupark.

Questions people ask
Is May a good time to visit Kraków?
Yes, for most people. Highs average close to 20°C and nights about 8°C, with some rain on about half the days, so pack a waterproof and a warm layer.
Can I climb St Mary's tower?
The church lists tower tours from Tuesday to Sunday, with tickets sold only on the day at its visitor centre on Mariacki Square. Climb or not, you will hear the bugle call every hour.
Will I eat on my own on Kraków Discovery?
Only if you want to. Jackie Whyte hosts all four nights, so there is company at dinner, and the days are yours to fill as you like.
Is there a single supplement on Kraków Discovery?
Yes. Every Spice Escapes holiday carries a single supplement or room-to-yourself cost, and our single supplement page explains how it works.
