Museum Island Berlin: which of the five museums to see on a short break

5 October 2026 · 5 min read

Museum Island Berlin is five museums on one island in the River Spree, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the home of the bust of Nefertiti. With one day, see two of them rather than five, buy the island's day ticket, and go any day but Monday, when every museum on the island is closed. Spice Escapes runs Berlin Bound, a long weekend for people who travel on their own, from a hotel by Alexanderplatz a short walk from the island: 3 nights, from £549.

Here are the five museums in a line each, which two to pick, the ticket and opening hours, and when the Pergamon Altar returns.

The five museums on the island, one line each

  • Neues Museum: the Egyptian Museum, with Nefertiti and the Berlin Gold Hat, in a building rebuilt by the British architect David Chipperfield.
  • Altes Museum: the first museum on the island, with Greek, Etruscan and Roman sculpture, jewellery and coins.
  • Alte Nationalgalerie: art from the French Revolution to the First World War, including Caspar David Friedrich's Monk by the Sea and Rodin's The Thinker.
  • Bode-Museum: European sculpture from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, with Donatello's Madonna Pazzi.
  • Pergamonmuseum: closed for renovation, with the Pergamon Altar due back in early June.

The modern James-Simon-Galerie, also by Chipperfield, is the visitor centre and holds the island's big exhibitions.

With one day, start with Nefertiti and choose one more

visitBerlin, the city's official tourism site, allows four to six hours with breaks for an overview of the island, and a full day to go deeper.

Start at the Neues Museum. Nefertiti stands in a glass case in the North Dome Hall on the upper floor. Then walk to the statue of the sun god Helios under the south dome, 80 metres away, and look back: he is reflected in her glass case.

After that, pick by taste. For paintings, the Alte Nationalgalerie: start on the third floor and work down. For sculpture, the Bode-Museum, whose café on the gallery looks into the dome. For lunch, Cu29 in the James-Simon-Galerie looks out over the Spree.

The Pergamon Altar is due back in early June

The Pergamonmuseum has been shut for a long renovation. visitBerlin says it will largely reopen in early June, with the Pergamon Altar and the Great Frieze in the Altar Hall, where you will be able to climb onto the altar structure. The Museum of Islamic Art returns too, with the Aleppo Room and twice the floor space it had before. The Ishtar Gate follows in the 2030s.

Until then, the Pergamon panorama exhibition just opposite, on Am Kupfergraben, shows original pieces from the ancient city and Yadegar Asisi's 360° panorama of it. Opening dates can move, so check smb.museum before you travel. The next Berlin Bound dates are 4 Jun 2027 – 7 Jun 2027.

Tickets and opening hours: one day ticket, and never a Monday

visitBerlin sells a Museum Island day ticket for the date you book, covering the Neues Museum, Altes Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, Bode-Museum, the Pergamon panorama and the James-Simon-Galerie exhibitions. It cannot be cancelled, and the listing does not yet say if it covers the reopened Pergamonmuseum. For a longer stay, the Museum Pass Berlin covers more than 30 museums, Museum Island included, on three consecutive days.

The island's museums open from 10am to 6pm Tuesday to Sunday and close on Mondays. The Altes Museum and Bode-Museum close at 5pm Tuesday to Friday. On a Friday to Monday break, that makes your museum day the Saturday or the Sunday.

Berlin Bound: a hotel near the island and a free Sunday to use it

Berlin Bound is 3 nights at the H4 Hotel Berlin Alexanderplatz, a short walk from Museum Island, the TV Tower and Hackescher Markt. You fly out on the Friday, with rooms ready by 3pm.

On Saturday your coordinator leads a day round the city on hop on, hop off tickets, and you can stay with them or go at your own speed. Sunday is free, which makes it the day for the island: book your ticket for it and go with whoever from the group wants to come.

Groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. Most people book on their own, and our guide for first-time solo travellers covers arriving not knowing anyone. A room to yourself carries a supplement, explained on our single supplement page. See the dates and book online on the Berlin Bound page.

If that weekend does not suit: Kraków or Ypres

Kraków Discovery is 4 nights at a hotel a few steps from the Main Market Square, hosted by Jackie Whyte, with days left open for Wawel Castle and optional trips offered to Schindler's Factory Museum and the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Dates: 26 May 2027 – 30 May 2027.

World War I: A Journey of Memory and Meaning goes by Eurostar to Ypres, hosted by Claire Dymond, with a local guide to Tyne Cot and the Sanctuary Wood trenches, a hotel well placed for the In Flanders Fields museum, and the Last Post at the Menin Gate each evening. Dates: 8 Apr 2027 – 11 Apr 2027.

More are under culture and discovery holidays, Germany and over-50s solo holidays, and in our guide to city breaks over 50.
