Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral: a winter morning, then Malá Strana

5 October 2026 · 5 min read

Prague Castle is the walled hilltop above the Vltava that has been the seat of Bohemian kings and then Czech presidents, and St Vitus Cathedral rises from its third courtyard. One basic ticket covers the cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George's Basilica and Golden Lane, and a well-timed winter morning is enough for all four. Spice Escapes builds that morning into Prague Christmas Magic, a long weekend for people travelling on their own, hosted by Sally Wiltshire, with Malá Strana below for the afternoon.

Below: the ticket, the order, the history and the walk down.

One ticket, four sights, open nine to four in winter

Prague City Tourism's listing says the basic circuit ticket is valid for two days, though each building lets you in once. From November to March the buildings open 9am to 4pm, and the castle grounds from 6am to 10pm.

The castle gardens list opening hours only from March to October, so in winter the views come from the terrace on Hradčany Square and from the cathedral's Great South Tower, 287 steps up, which closes in bad weather.

Cathedral first, unless the morning is a Sunday

  • 9am: in through the Titans Gate on Hradčany Square, where the guard changes on the hour, and on to the cathedral.
  • Mid-morning: the Old Royal Palace and Vladislav Hall, next door.
  • Late morning: St George's Basilica, then Golden Lane.
  • Noon: the changing of the guard with fanfare in the First Courtyard.

On Sundays the cathedral opens to visitors only at noon, after the morning Masses. So turn the morning round and see it last.

St Vitus Cathedral took nearly six hundred years to finish

Charles IV and his father, John of Bohemia, founded the Gothic cathedral in the fourteenth century, where Prince Wenceslas had built a rotunda for a relic of St Vitus. It was completed only in the twentieth century, for the thousandth anniversary of Wenceslas.

Peter Parler took over the building at twenty-three, and his net vault over the main aisle was the first of its kind in Europe. In the triforium, the gallery about 14 metres up, are his workshop's 21 portrait busts of Charles IV's family, archbishops and the builders themselves.

The St Wenceslas Chapel, its lower walls panelled with precious stones, holds the saint's tomb, and a door in its corner leads to the Crown Chamber. Charles IV and Rudolf II lie in the royal crypt, and outside, the Golden Gate's Last Judgement mosaic is made from about a million pieces of glass and marble.

The palace, the basilica and Golden Lane tell the older story

Bohemian rulers lived in the Old Royal Palace from the tenth century. Its Vladislav Hall, the largest secular space in medieval Prague, saw coronation feasts and knights' tournaments.

St George's Basilica, founded around 920, is Prague's second oldest church, with two white towers called Adam and Eve. St Ludmila, grandmother of Wenceslas, is buried here.

Golden Lane's tiny houses were built into the castle walls at the end of the sixteenth century, and Franz Kafka lived and worked at number 22 during the First World War. At its end, the Daliborka Tower still has the hole in its floor through which prisoners were lowered into the dungeon.

Down Nerudova Street into Malá Strana for the afternoon

From the castle, walk down Nerudova Street, part of the old Royal Route, to Malostranské náměstí. The square belongs to the Baroque Church of St Nicholas, whose interior rises almost 57 metres to the top of its lantern, the highest in Prague.

Then head for the river. Kampa is the island between the Vltava and the Čertovka, the Devil's Stream. The taller Lesser Town Bridge Tower, open into the evening in December, looks out over Charles Bridge.

How the castle morning fits the Prague Christmas Magic weekend

Prague Christmas Magic is 3 nights, 4 Dec 2026 – 7 Dec 2026, from £675. In the provisional itinerary, day three is the castle and St Vitus in the morning, Malá Strana's lanes and cafés in the afternoon, and a Christmas market as evening falls.

If day three falls on a Sunday, see the cathedral last. The host is with the group throughout, and home is Hotel Rott, on Little Square by Old Town Square. See the dates and book online on the Prague Christmas Magic page.

Most people on a Spice holiday book on their own. Groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty, so there is someone to compare notes with in Vladislav Hall and company for a svařák, the Czech mulled wine, afterwards.

A room to yourself carries a single supplement or room-to-yourself cost. For a first trip on your own, see first-time solo travellers and over-50s solo holidays.

Wawel Castle in Kraków, Museum Island in Berlin

Kraków Discovery is 4 nights, 26 May 2027 – 30 May 2027, from £589, hosted by Jackie Whyte, staying about 500 metres from Wawel Castle. Optional trips to Schindler's Factory Museum and the Wieliczka Salt Mine are offered.

Berlin Bound is 3 nights, 4 Jun 2027 – 7 Jun 2027, from £549, staying a short walk from Museum Island, with a coordinator leading one day round the city.

Questions people ask

How long do you need for Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral?

Allow a morning for the four sights on the basic ticket. The castle's own audio guide, available in English, runs for three hours.

When is the changing of the guard?

The guard changes every hour from 9am to 6pm at the Titans Gate and the Powder Bridge Gate. The ceremonial change, with fanfare, is in the First Courtyard every day at noon.

Can you see the crown jewels?

The originals stay in the Crown Chamber, whose door has seven keys held by seven office-holders, among them the president and the Archbishop of Prague. Copies are shown in The Story of Prague Castle exhibition, on a separate ticket.

Is it cold inside in winter?

Some of it is. St George's Basilica and the Church of St Nicholas are not heated, so keep a warm layer on all day.
