River cruises for solo travellers: Paris, Venice and the Ganges, with a host
River cruises for solo travellers work best when you board with a small group who are also on their own, and that is how Spice Escapes runs them: a host travels with you, most people have booked by themselves, and the ship is your hotel. Ours are short hosted breaks on the Seine in Paris and the Venetian Lagoon, a river boat through the middle of Berlin, and a long voyage on the Ganges in India, a charter of our own.
You unpack once, the view changes outside the window and the city is a few steps off the gangway. What spoils it on your own is a dining room laid for couples, a cabin priced for two, and long evenings with nobody to compare notes with.
What a host and a group add to a river ship
On a Spice Escapes river break you are part of a group of around fifteen people, and some reach twenty, sharing the ship with other passengers but sharing your table, your walks and your evenings with each other. Your host meets the group, makes the introductions on the first evening and knows everyone by name before breakfast. You step ashore with people you know, or alone, and find them again at dinner.
That matters most at the welcome drink, the gala dinner and the night cruise, when the city lights up and you want someone beside you to say "look at that".
Paris from a river ship on the Seine
All Inclusive Perfect Paris is the closest thing we have to a classic river cruise in a capital city. The MS Botticelli is your hotel for 3 nights, moored a short walk from the Eiffel Tower, the Trocadéro Gardens and Invalides. Full board with drinks on board is included, so the wallet can stay in the cabin.
There is a guided coach tour of the city and a guided walk round Montmartre, with afternoons free. Evenings bring a themed Parisian welcome night, a gala dinner, and a cruise through Paris by night along the Seine, subject to river conditions. You can arrive by air into Charles de Gaulle or by Eurostar, and people travelling the same way link up for the transfer, so you are not crossing Paris on your own. Your host is Samantha Pike, dates are 3 Feb 2027 – 6 Feb 2027, prices from £679, and places are 13 places left. Our piece on seeing Paris from the Seine gives a feel for the city from the water.
Venice and the lagoon aboard the MS Michelangelo
All Inclusive Treasures of Venice suits the river cruiser who wants the ship to move as well as moor. The MS Michelangelo carries a crew of twenty-five and is sized for the lagoon, moored close to St Mark's Square. You arrive by water taxi and settle in with a welcome drink.
One afternoon the ship crosses the lagoon to Burano and its rainbow-coloured houses, and later it carries you to Chioggia, often called Little Venice, before a gala night on board. All meals and drinks at the bar are included. The Doge's Palace, Murano and Padua are optional extras. It runs for 4 nights with Samantha Pike hosting, on 19 Nov 2026 – 23 Nov 2026, from £929. Places: Waitlist only. There is more on the city in our guide to all inclusive Venice holidays.
Berlin, with a river boat in the middle of the weekend
Not every river cruiser wants to sleep on the water. Berlin Bound is a hotel stay by Alexanderplatz, a short walk from Museum Island, with a river cruise ticket for the Saturday or the Sunday. The coordinator leads one day round the city and the rest is yours. It is 3 nights, from £549, on 4 Jun 2027 – 7 Jun 2027, with places 22 places left.
River ship or ocean ship for someone on their own
A river ship is smaller and calmer, you are rarely out of sight of land, and the city is right there each morning. An ocean ship gives you more days aboard, a pool and a spa, and longer stretches at sea where the group really gets to know each other. It depends whether you want the place or the voyage.
If the voyage appeals, the Summertime Fjordland Cruise sails from London Tilbury and back, so there are no flights or airports at all. It calls at Eidfjord, Måløy and Geiranger, with full board, spa and pool included. It is 8 nights with Pam Harte, on 21 Aug 2027 – 29 Aug 2027, from £1,129, and places are 4 places left. Our wider guide to cruises for solo travellers over 50 compares every sailing we run.
The long river voyage: the Ganges in India
If what you want is many nights on a river ship, this is the one. India: Kolkata and The Lower Ganges River Cruise is a Spice Escapes exclusive charter aboard the RV Kalaw Pandaw, with just eighteen staterooms and an all-inclusive drinks package. There is a private visit to the Raj Bhavan arranged for Spice Escapes guests only. It runs for several nights, hosted by one of our hosts, on dates to be confirmed, from price on request. Places: ask us.
The cabin for one and what it costs
River ship cabins are built for two, and every Spice Escapes holiday carries a single supplement or room-to-yourself cost. Our single supplement page explains how it works and what you are paying for. In Paris and Venice, meals and drinks on board are already paid, which helps.

Questions people ask
Is there a single cabin on a river ship?
River ship cabins are usually built for two, so a cabin to yourself carries a single supplement or room-to-yourself cost. We tell you that cost upfront before you book. Ask us and we will check the options on the ship you have in mind.
Will I be the only person on my own among couples?
The other passengers on the ship may be couples, but your Spice Escapes group is mostly people who booked by themselves. You eat, explore and spend evenings with that group and your host. Arriving alone is the normal way to join us.
Which river cruise suits a first trip on my own?
Paris or Venice, because both are short breaks where the ship is your hotel and your meals on board are already paid. You unpack once, the host is with you from the first evening, and you are home before the week is out. If you already know you love long trips, the Ganges voyage in India is the one to ask about.
Do I have to join every excursion?
Not at all, and plenty of people take a free afternoon on their own. The group is there at dinner when you want company again.
