Safest holidays for solo female travellers: a host, a group and your own room
The safest holidays for solo female travellers are the ones where you are never left to work out the risky moments alone: the airport at the far end, the walk back after dinner, the day something goes wrong. Spice Escapes runs small hosted group holidays for people travelling on their own, so a host who knows the place travels with you, a group is around you in the evenings, and you still have a room of your own to close the door on.
A Spice Escapes group is mixed, men and women, and built around people who booked on their own. Groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. Nobody is there to chaperone you. They are there so the exposed parts of travel stop being yours alone to carry.
Where a woman on her own actually feels unsafe
Ask women who have travelled solo and the list is rarely about crime figures.
- Arriving. A strange airport and nobody who knows you have landed.
- After dark. The route back to a hotel on the edge of town.
- Standing out. The table for one and the obvious map.
- The bad day. A lost bag or a fever, and nobody to tell.
Each holiday below answers some of those, and where a trip leaves you to make your own way, we say so. For a city-by-city picture, see our guide to solo female travel Europe destinations.
Venice, where you land with the group and sleep on the water
All Inclusive Treasures of Venice deals with arriving better than almost anything we run. The flights land at similar times, so you wait for the rest of the group at the airport and take the water taxi onto the island together. Your hotel is the ship, moored close to St Mark's Square, so the walk home after an evening out is short.
All meals and drinks at the bar are included on board, so there is no table for one to book. It runs for 4 nights, your host is Samantha Pike, prices start £929, and the dates are 19 Nov 2026 – 23 Nov 2026. Places: Waitlist only.
Kraków, with the hotel on the main square
Women asking whether Kraków is safe alone are usually picturing the evenings. On Kraków Discovery the group stays at the Best Western Plus Kraków Old Town, a few steps from the Main Market Square, so the busiest, best-lit part of the city is your front door. Days are left open, and the host is with the group for all four nights, so there is company at dinner.
One honest note: the itinerary has you make your way to the hotel on arrival, so ask us how the group gets in from the airport before you book. 4 nights with Jackie Whyte, from £589, on 26 May 2027 – 30 May 2027. Places: 9 places left.
Iceland, with the far-flung days arranged for you
Many women would go to Iceland alone, until they picture driving the Golden Circle in winter light. Iceland Discovery takes that off the table. The full day to Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss is included, so is entrance to the Blue Lagoon, and the group stays at the Centerhotel Plaza in central Reykjavik. The coach cannot reach the door, so there is a short walk from the drop-off.
Daylight is short at that time of year, which is one more reason to have the excursions organised. 4 nights, hosted by Jackie Whyte, from £1,065, on 12 Nov 2026 – 16 Nov 2026. Places: 3 places left.
Malta, a calm week with most evenings already planned
If what you want is sun and an easy pace rather than a city, Maltese Chillout keeps things simple. The group stays at Number 11, an adults-only hotel in the heart of St Julian's with a rooftop pool terrace. Four evening meals are included, so most nights are already arranged and you are not deciding where to eat alone.
several nights, hosted by one of our hosts, from price on request, on dates to be confirmed. Places: ask us.
South Africa, when you want to go further but not alone
Cape Town is the trip many women would never attempt alone. On South Africa Discovery your local host meets you in arrivals and stays for the whole trip. The big days are done together: Cape Point and the penguins at Boulders Beach, the Winelands, and an overnight at a private game reserve with a sunrise game drive. On the free day, your host is the person to ask before you head out on your own.
10 nights with Sue Giddings, from £3,499, on 29 Mar 2027 – 8 Apr 2027. Places: 8 places left.
What a host does, and what they do not
A host is a Spice Escapes person who travels with the group from start to finish. They know the plan, gather people for dinner and are the first person to tell if you feel unwell or uneasy. They are not a guard, and ordinary sense still applies. What changes is that someone knows where you are staying, someone notices if you do not come down to breakfast, and there is always a table you can join.
If this is your first time going away alone, our page for first-time solo travellers and over 50s solo holidays shows the whole programme. Short trips like Venice and Kraków sit among our short breaks, and you can browse more of Italy or Poland.
Questions people ask
What happens if something goes wrong while I am away?
Tell your host first, because they are travelling with you and know the hotel, the plan and the local help. The team at home backs them up. Our flight-inclusive holidays are ATOL protected, which covers you if the holiday itself fails.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, insurance is required, and Spice Escapes does not sell it, so you arrange your own. Look for medical cover abroad, repatriation, cancellation and cover for lost bags and anything you would need replacing.
Will I have to share a room with someone I do not know?
No, you have your own room, with your own key and your own door. That room carries a single supplement or room-to-yourself cost, and our single supplement page explains how it works.
Are the groups only women?
No, Spice Escapes runs mixed groups of men and women who mostly travel on their own. The host makes sure nobody is left out.
Can I go off on my own during the trip?
Yes, free time is genuinely free, and plenty of women spend a morning alone and rejoin the group for dinner. Just let your host know your plans, the same way you would tell a friend at home.
Talk to a person before you decide
If safety is the thing holding you back, say so when you get in touch. Tell us which trip you are weighing up and what worries you, and we will answer plainly. Jackie Whyte hosts Kraków, Iceland and Malta and is happy to talk you through how her groups run. Send us an enquiry and someone from the team will come back to you with places, prices and an honest view of which holiday suits you.
