South Africa itinerary 10 days: Cape Town, the winelands and one night on safari
A realistic ten-day South Africa itinerary for a first long-haul trip keeps to one Cape Town hotel, gives a day each to the Cape Peninsula and the winelands, builds in free time and adds one night at a game reserve for a sunrise safari drive. That is the plan Spice Escapes runs on South Africa Discovery, a hosted trip for people travelling on their own, with Sue Giddings meeting you at arrivals and staying with the group for the whole trip.
Below is how the days run, what is arranged and where your free time falls. The trip is 10 nights, 29 Mar 2027 – 8 Apr 2027, from £3,499. If the shape already suits you, see the dates and book online.
Why one base works: you unpack once, at The Vineyard
The easy mistake on a first long-haul trip is trying to see a whole country in ten days. This plan does less and does it properly. On the first afternoon you check into The Vineyard, a hotel in eight acres of gardens on the slopes of Table Mountain, and it stays your base for the rest of your time in Cape Town.
You unpack once. After a night on a plane, that is worth more than a long list of stops.
Days 1 and 2: an overnight flight, Sue at arrivals and lunch together
You fly overnight from the UK and land in Cape Town mid-morning. Sue is waiting in arrivals, so you meet your host before you have left the airport.
The first afternoon is gentle: an orientation tour of the city, an included late lunch at a local restaurant, a little time to relax and then the hotel. That evening you meet Sue again for dinner, which is included too.
Day 3: the Cape Peninsula, a full day out with lunch included
After breakfast the group heads through Camps Bay and Hout Bay, over Chapman's Peak Drive to the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point, then back along False Bay past the penguins at Boulders Beach, stopping for lunch at a local restaurant on the way. At Cape Point you choose the funicular, which is not included, or the walk up to the historic lighthouse. After a full day like that, the next one is yours.
Day 4: a free day for Table Mountain, Robben Island or the Waterfront
Breakfast is the only fixed thing. The itinerary offers an optional excursion up Table Mountain, weather permitting, or to Robben Island, and suggests a wander round the V&A Waterfront.
Table Mountain is one of the New7Wonders of Nature, and its rotating cable car reaches the top, some 3,500 feet above the city, in about five minutes. Robben Island is where Nelson Mandela was held for 18 years. Its tours start at the Nelson Mandela Gateway on the Waterfront, cross by ferry and are guided by a former political prisoner, so the island and the Waterfront sit well together on one day.
The Waterfront is in South Africa's oldest working harbour, with more than 80 places to eat. Cape Town's menus mix Malay, Dutch, French, Portuguese and African flavours, and a lunch of your own choosing here is a good way to try them. For the evening, Cape Town Tourism's advice is to ask your hosts where to go after dusk, and on this trip that means asking Sue.
Day 5: Franschhoek and the Cape Winelands
After breakfast the group leaves Cape Town through mountain scenery for Franschhoek, a village known for its French Huguenot heritage and award-winning vineyards. There is time to stroll the centre, look round the small shops and take in the historic buildings. South African Tourism counts six wine routes in the Cape Winelands, and this trip picks Franschhoek.
The night away: a private game reserve and a sunrise drive
The safari is one night at a private game reserve, with a game drive at sunrise the next morning. The holiday page shows which day it falls on and the full day by day to the end of the trip.
What is arranged for you, and what is yours to choose
- Arranged: Sue throughout, the orientation tour, the peninsula day, the Franschhoek day and the game reserve night with its sunrise drive.
- Meals listed as included in the first four days: meals on the flight out, lunch and dinner on arrival, breakfast and lunch on the peninsula day, breakfast on the free day.
- Your choice: Table Mountain or Robben Island as optional excursions, the Waterfront, the Cape Point funicular or the walk.
- Your time: the hotel's spa, its pools (one heated and indoors) and its riverside garden trails.
Going on your own, with a group around you
Most people on Spice Escapes holidays book on their own. Groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. The included lunch and dinner on arrival day mean you are eating with the group from the first afternoon.
A room to yourself carries a single supplement. For how a hosted group works, read our guide for first-time solo travellers and your first group holiday. For the wider range, see solo holidays for over 50s, South Africa and wildlife and safari holidays.
Two other set plans, if the Cape dates do not fit
Maldives Wildlife Cruise & Beach Chillout splits busy days and free days just as clearly: seven nights on MV Felicity, a wooden boat for twelve guests at most, including a whole day looking for whale sharks off Dhigurah, then three nights on Fulhadhoo with nothing scheduled. It is 12 nights, 27 Nov 2027 – 9 Dec 2027, from £4,199, hosted by Jonathan Banks. Places now: 2 places left.
To start closer to home, Crete Discovery has the same idea on a direct flight: two bases only, three nights in Aghios Nikolaos and four in Rethymno, half board throughout and free time in each town. It is 7 nights, 5 Oct 2027 – 12 Oct 2027, from £1,499, hosted by Lauren Fawkes.
Questions people ask
Is ten days enough for South Africa?
It is enough for Cape Town, the peninsula, the winelands and a night on safari, as long as Cape Town stays your base. Adding a second region in the same ten days means more travel days and more packing.
How long is the flight to Cape Town?
South African Tourism puts flights from Europe at 10 to 12 hours. On this trip you fly overnight and land mid-morning, so your first day in Cape Town starts with a city tour and lunch.
What should I check on my passport?
South African Tourism's entry guidance asks for a passport valid for at least 30 days after your visit ends, with unused pages for stamps. Rules change, so check the UK government's current advice for South Africa before you travel.
Is the pace hard going for a first long-haul trip?
The pace is steady rather than rushed, with one hotel for the Cape Town stay, a host from the airport onwards and a free day straight after the peninsula. If anything about it worries you, ask Sue before you book.
The plan is ready: see the dates and book online
