Alternatives to escorted coach tours: a small hosted group for people on their own

3 October 2026 · 6 min read

If you are searching for alternatives to escorted coach tours because you would be going on your own, Spice Escapes runs small hosted group holidays where most people have booked alone, a host travels with you from start to finish, and you spend more of the week in one or two places than in a coach seat. Titan, Newmarket and Leger all do escorted touring well, so here is a fair comparison and the holidays of ours that suit someone who enjoyed that style.

Spice Escapes has no connection with any of the companies named here. Everything we say about them comes from their own websites.

Why people on their own start looking elsewhere

An escorted coach tour solves a lot. Somebody else plans the route, carries the tickets and knows where the toilets are. What it can leave open, if you book a standard departure on your own, is who you sit with. Plenty of people tell us the coach was fine. It was the evenings, being the one person at the table without a partner, that made them look again.

Many coach operators now run departures just for solo travellers, and they are worth a look. At Spice Escapes every holiday is shaped around people travelling on their own, and the host's job is the people as much as the plan.

What Titan, Newmarket and Leger say they do well

  • Titan Travel. Titan describes a nationwide shared chauffeur service that gets your holiday off to a relaxed start, and a tour manager who takes care of all the logistics. On its solo tours you always have your own room, and it says that on standard departures you still have your own room but may pay a supplement. Its tour pages show which dates are solo departures.
  • Newmarket Holidays. Newmarket runs Exclusively for Solos tours with a dedicated solo group tour manager, your own double room with private bathroom at no extra cost, and an average group size of 18 to 20, with no more than 24. It also lists over 30 classic tours with no single supplement places on selected dates.
  • Leger Holidays. Leger's solo tours include sole use of your own room with no single supplement to pay, and if you choose a coach holiday and live within 10 miles of one of its local joining points, it collects you from home free of charge. On its battlefield tours, each coach or air tour has a Specialist Battlefield Guide.

If a pick-up from your door, a long touring route with a new town most nights, or a room with no supplement matters most to you, one of those companies may suit you better than we would, and we would rather you knew that now.

What a Spice Escapes week feels like instead

Our holidays are for people in their 40s, 50s and 60s, and most people book on their own, so nobody arrives as the odd one out. Groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. The host gets people together at breakfast to plan the day, and in the evening makes sure the question of where to eat, and who with, answers itself.

We tend to stay put. You unpack once, and the days mix included visits, optional extras and time to wander, with the host and the group there whenever you want company.

To be straight with you, every Spice Escapes holiday carries a single supplement or a cost for having a room to yourself. Our single supplement page explains how it works. Our flight-inclusive holidays are ATOL protected. There is more on the way we travel in what makes a Spice Escape different.

If Leger's battlefields drew you in: Ypres by train

World War I, A Journey of Memory and Meaning with Wings is a short break run with our travel partners Wings. You take the Eurostar from St Pancras, so there is no airport and no flight. A local guide takes you to Tyne Cot and the trenches at Sanctuary Wood, and the Last Post sounds at the Menin Gate each evening, minutes from the family-run Albion Hotel where you stay all three nights.

It runs for 3 nights, departing 8 Apr 2027 – 11 Apr 2027, from £1,019, hosted by Claire Dymond. Places: 14 places left. More on our Belgium holidays page.

If you liked the included excursions: Iceland

Coach tour regulars often like knowing the big sights are booked. Iceland Discovery includes a full day on the Golden Circle, with Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, a panoramic tour of Reykjavik, and entrance to the Blue Lagoon in the price rather than as an add-on. You stay at the central Centerhotel Plaza, which has a bar for comparing notes afterwards.

4 nights, departing 12 Nov 2026 – 16 Nov 2026, from £1,414, hosted by Jackie Whyte. Places: 1 place left.

If you liked a guide who knows the history: Athens

Ancient Athens starts the way a good tour should, with the whole group walking to a local restaurant on the first evening to get to know each other. After that you choose: an optional tour of the Acropolis and Ancient Agora with a licensed guide, an optional food tour with more than eighteen tastings, or Athens your own way.

4 nights, departing 10 Mar 2027 – 14 Mar 2027, from £579, hosted by Jackie Whyte. Places: 16 places left. More from Greece on our Greece holidays page.

If you liked seeing a city from the top deck: Seville

On Surprising Seville a 48-hour hop-on hop-off bus ticket is included, so you still get the guided view of the city without being tied to one coach all week. You stay at the Hotel America, minutes from the cathedral and the Barrio de Santa Cruz. The Alcázar and a flamenco evening at El Arenal are optional extras.

4 nights, departing 4 Mar 2027 – 8 Mar 2027, from £549, hosted by Jackie Whyte. Places: 24 places left. Our guide to European city breaks for solo travellers covers more cities like this.

If you are tired of packing every morning: Croatia

Croatian Chillout is the opposite of a touring week, and that is the point. You stay all week at Hotel Punta beside Veli Lošinj, half board, so breakfast and dinner are taken care of. The plan includes a boat day round the Lošinj archipelago with a chance of dolphins, and Mali Lošinj and its Apoxyomenos museum are a 3km walk or cycle away. The transfer from Pula takes about three hours, with a short ferry crossing.

7 nights, departing 1 May 2027 – 8 May 2027, from £869, hosted by Jackie Whyte. Places: 15 places left. See all our culture and discovery holidays.

Questions people ask

Is Spice Escapes an escorted coach tour company?

Not in the usual sense. A Spice host travels with the group, and some trips use a coach for transfers and excursions, but most of the week is spent in one base.

Will I be the only person travelling on my own?

Very unlikely. Most people who book with us come on their own, and the host makes sure everyone is included from the first evening.

Do you pick up from home like some coach operators?

We do not offer a home pick-up. You make your own way to the airport or station, and if that worries you, tell us and we will talk through the easiest route.

How big are the groups?

Groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. That is small enough for the host to know everyone by name.

Is there a single supplement?

Yes, every Spice Escapes holiday has a single supplement or a cost for having a room to yourself. It is shown on each holiday page before you book.

Tell us which tour you enjoyed

Tell us what you liked about your last coach tour and what you would change, and we will point you to the holiday that fits and how many places are left. Rob Thompson, who hosts trips himself, and the rest of the team are happy to talk it through by phone or email. If this would be your first trip without a partner or friend, read our guide for first-time solo travellers and see our over 50s solo holidays. When you are ready, get in touch with the team.
