Croatia in May: warm days, a fresh sea and a hosted week on Lošinj

5 October 2026 · 4 min read

Croatia in May is warm rather than hot: on the island of Lošinj, an average May brings about nine hours of sunshine a day and not one day reaching 30°C, and the sea is fresh. Spice Escapes takes a hosted group there in spring on Croatian Chillout, a half-board week at Hotel Punta beside Veli Lošinj, with the transfers, the dinners and the company arranged.

The holiday is 7 nights, 1 May 2027 – 8 May 2027, from £869. See the dates and book online on the Croatian Chillout page, or read on for the weather, the sea and what is open.

Is Croatia warm in May? About 21°C by day and long, sunny afternoons

Expect about 21°C on a May afternoon and 13°C at night. Those are the World Meteorological Organization's averages for Rijeka, the nearest city on its list and also in Kvarner.

On the island, Croatia's national weather service has more than six decades of records from Mali Lošinj, 3km from the hotel. An average May there has about 288 hours of sunshine, roughly nine a day, and 65mm of rain over about ten days.

An average July at Mali Lošinj brings 13 days of 30°C or more. May brings about six days of 25°C or more and none of 30°C, so a hill walk or a cycle into town is a pleasure. These are averages, never a promise. For the week, pack:

  • water shoes, as many of the beaches are rocky or pebbled
  • walking shoes or boots for the trails
  • a layer for nights of around 13°C
  • a light waterproof for the days with rain

The sea in May is fresh, though shallow bays can be warmer

Croatia's national tourist board puts the comfortable swimming range at 22°C to 26°C and says the main season runs from June to mid-September, though the more adventurous swim from May. Shallow bays and sheltered spots can be warmer than average.

Lošinj has plenty of those. The week's suggested plan takes in Rovenska and Punta beaches, a swim at Čikat Bay and the quieter coves of Balvanida and Javorna.

We go in May, before the summer crowds and prices

We go in spring for the early sunshine and a proper chance to unwind. May is warm enough for outdoor life and coastal travel, and it comes before the peak summer crowds and prices arrive.

Croatia's tourist board says the mild temperatures of spring make outdoor activity comfortable. That suits the coastal trail towards Krivica Bay and the pine woods up Saint Ivan Hill.

What is open on Lošinj in May: the museum, six days a week

The Museum of Apoxyomenos on the Mali Lošinj waterfront, home to a bronze athlete raised from the sea, keeps spring hours from Easter: 10am to 6pm, Tuesday to Sunday.

The local tourist board lists boat lines from Mali Lošinj to the islands of Ilovik, Susak and Unije, subject to change, so check the last boat back on the island-hopping day. Croatia's national tourist board adds that the jugo, a wind most common in spring and autumn, can interrupt boats to the islands.

A half-board week with a host and a table to come back to

Breakfast and dinner are included at Hotel Punta, so every evening starts with people to eat with, and the hotel has a spa and an infinity seawater pool. Jackie Whyte hosts the week and travels with the group. The three-hour transfer from Pula, with its ferry crossing, is arranged for you.

If Lošinj does not fit: a spring cruise, Crete in the autumn or Cantabria

Mediterranean Cruising Italian Style with WingsItaly is also a spring departure: 8 nights, 6 May 2027 – 14 May 2027. You fly to Rome a day early, Andrea and Claire host throughout, and drinks and gratuities are included on board. See our cruises for solo travellers over 50.

If a warm sea matters most, Crete Discovery goes in the autumn, when our holiday notes give a sea of 22 to 24°C: 7 nights, 5 Oct 2027 – 12 Oct 2027, hosted by Lauren Fawkes, half board throughout.

Read, Relax & Restore: A Week in Spain's Green North is a week at a quiet house in Cantabria, 7 nights, 6 Jun 2027 – 13 Jun 2027. Its weather is less predictable than the Mediterranean, so go for the books, the walks and the home cooking.
