A day trip to Cadiz: old streets, a market lunch and an afternoon at La Caleta
A day trip to Cadiz is one of the best days out on the Atlantic side of Andalucía: an old port city almost surrounded by the sea, small enough to walk, with a market lunch and a beach in town. Spice Escapes runs hosted small-group holidays for people who travel on their own, and its week in Vejer de la Frontera, in the same province, offers the chance to see Cadiz with company and the arranging done for you.
Three thousand years by the sea
Spain's national tourist board says the Phoenicians founded Cadiz 3,000 years ago and calls it the oldest city in Western Europe. Its overseas trade drew pirates, so the city built bastions, castles and watchtowers on its flat roofs, and those white towers still mark the skyline.
A morning among the monuments
Start at the cathedral, whose dome of yellow tiles faces the Atlantic, and go up its Clock Tower for the view across the white towers to the sea. Beside it is El Pópulo, the oldest quarter, entered through three 13th-century arches, with a Roman theatre from the 1st century BC.
From the Plaza de San Juan de Dios it is a ten-minute walk to the Torre Tavira, built by merchants to watch for their ships. Its 173 steps climb to what many call the best viewpoint in Cadiz, and it keeps a camera obscura, best left as a surprise.
Where to stop for lunch
Head for the Plaza de las Flores, a lively triangular square with café terraces and a few famous fried fish shops. Next door is the Central Market, built in 1838, with more than 100 stalls of fish, olives and pastries, and a Rincón Gastronómico serving local and international dishes at outdoor tables.
Order pescaíto frito, the little fried fish, and tortillitas de camarones, crisp shrimp pancakes. In summer, look for mackerel with piriñaca, chopped tomato, pepper and onion dressed with olive oil and sherry vinegar.
An afternoon by the water
Walk off lunch in the Genovés Park, the largest green space in the old quarter, then follow the coast to Santa Catalina Castle, the oldest fortress in Cadiz. It looks over La Caleta, the only beach in the old town, and across to San Sebastián Castle, on a tiny island you can reach along a long breakwater. Finish on the Campo del Sur seafront at sunset, with the cathedral in view.
The Cadiz day on Chasing the Eclipse
Chasing the Eclipse is 7 nights based in Vejer, from £2,899, with Rob Thompson as your host. The dates are 31 Jul 2027 – 7 Aug 2027.
The listing offers the opportunity to visit Cadiz: its old town, squares and historic streets, lunch or a drink, and the sea breeze. The route above is our suggestion, and there will be company at the table if you want it. Other days could bring Jerez for sherry and flamenco, and a guided walk around Vejer. The group stays at the Hotel Tugasa Convento San Francisco, a restored 17th-century Franciscan monastery, and the expert for the week is Dr Matthew Bothwell, the University of Cambridge Public Astronomer at the Institute of Astronomy.
The band of totality for the total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027 will cover almost the entire province of Cadiz, according to the Instituto Geográfico Nacional. NASA's advice: use certified solar viewing glasses that meet ISO 12312-2, and look at the sun directly only during totality itself, putting them back on the moment bright sun returns.
On your own, with a table to join
Most people on a Spice holiday book on their own, and groups are around fifteen people, and some reach twenty. The host travels with the group and does the organising, so a day like this is a matter of turning up. A room to yourself carries a supplement, explained on our single supplement page. For more on travelling this way, see our pages for first-time solo travellers and solo holidays for the over 50s.
