Hosted holiday or escorted tour? What is the difference
A hosted holiday and an escorted tour both have someone travelling with you, but they are built differently. On a Spice Escapes hosted holiday a Spice host who is part of the group travels with you, the group usually stays in one or two places, and time is left open. An escorted tour is usually built around a route, with a tour manager looking after the logistics, and it often moves to a new hotel every day or two.
This page sets the two side by side, with a package holiday as the third option, and ends with an honest word on which suits whom. The examples are Spice Escapes holidays, such as
Crete Discovery, so you can see each point on a real itinerary.
Three kinds of organised holiday, in a line each
- Package holiday: flights and a hotel sold together, often with a representative at the resort. The people around you are whoever else booked.
- Escorted tour: a route planned by the operator, with a tour manager or guide who travels with the group, usually by coach and often moving on every day or two.
- Hosted holiday: a group that usually stays in one or two places, with a Spice host who is part of the group, welcomes everyone, helps people get to know each other and is there if you need anything.
The lines blur at the edges, and that is fine. What matters is the shape of the week, so the next sections compare the shape.
How many places do you sleep in?
This is the clearest difference. An escorted tour tends to cover ground, so you pack and unpack often. A hosted holiday stays put.
Crete Discovery: two bases, half board throughout
5 Oct 2027 – 12 Oct 2027 · 7 nightsCrete DiscoveryPlaces availablefrom £1,4997 already goingSee this holiday →
Crete covers a lot of ground and still has two bases only. You settle in Agios Nikolaos for the first three nights, at the four-star Miramare Hotel and Spa or a similar hotel, then move once, across the island, to the Theartemis Palace in Rethymno for the last four, with half board throughout and a spa and two pools at each. The itinerary runs on an exclusive coach, with days out round Mirabello Bay to Plaka and Elounda, up to a home-cooked lunch at a family taverna on the Lasithi Plateau, and from Rethymno to Chania and Preveli Monastery, with Heraklion on the drive between the two hotels. Apart from that one move, every evening ends back at the same hotel.
Kraków Discovery: one hotel, days left open
26 May 2027 – 30 May 2027 · 4 nightsKraków DiscoveryPlaces availablefrom £58918 already goingSee this holiday →
Kraków goes further and uses a single hotel, the Best Western Plus Kraków Old Town, in a restored nineteenth century townhouse a few steps from the Main Market Square, with Wawel Castle about 500 metres away. A Spice host is with the group for all the nights, and the days themselves are suggestions: wander the old town at your own pace, or add the optional visits to Schindler's Factory Museum, the Wieliczka Salt Mine and Auschwitz-Birkenau, which need booking with the holiday. With one hotel there is no packing and unpacking, only a base to come back to.
Who decides what happens on the day?
On a route-based tour the day is usually set by the operator's timetable. On a hosted holiday the Spice host plans with the group and the group can say what it would like. At
Lake Como Discovery the Spice host arranges meet-ups over breakfast to talk through the plan for the day, and everyone can gather in the hotel bar before dinner to compare notes.
Ancient Athens: a plan, with the choices left to you
10 Mar 2027 – 14 Mar 2027 · 4 nightsAncient AthensPlaces availablefrom £5797 already goingSee this holiday →
Ancient Athens shows how a plan and free choice sit together. On the first day you transfer from the airport to the hotel and, in the evening, walk to a local restaurant to get to know the rest of the group. After that you choose: explore independently or join the optional guided tour of the city with a licensed guide, which takes in the Acropolis and Ancient Agora, and on another morning an optional food tour where you try more than eighteen things, from a Greek coffee and a koulouri to spanakopita and bougatsa still warm from the oven.
What is optional, and what is free time?
Almost every hosted holiday holds time open. Even on Berlin Bound, where the Spice host leads one day round the city, the rest of the stay is your own. Optional extras are described as optional on the holiday page, so you know what is included and what you would add.
A tour manager on a long route tends to have less room to give you that, because the next hotel is often a few hours away. It is a trade, not a fault: you see more places in a week, and you decide less.
Which one suits you? A fair answer
- If you want to see as many places as possible in a week, an escorted tour may suit you better than we would.
- If a pick-up from your door matters most, some coach operators offer it, and it is worth checking before you choose.
- If you want to unpack once or twice, keep time of your own and have company at dinner when you want it, a hosted holiday is built for that.
- If you are choosing between several operators, read the comparisons below and then look at the dates.
We have written fair comparisons with named operators, each drawn only from their own websites. Alternatives to escorted coach tours covers coach touring, and Saga alternatives for people who travel on their own covers Saga. For what a Spice host does day to day, read what a holiday host does.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between a hosted holiday and an escorted tour?
An escorted tour is usually built around a route and a tour manager, and often moves hotel every day or two. A hosted holiday stays in one or two places with a Spice host who is part of the group, and leaves time open. Which suits you depends on whether you would rather see more places or unpack less.
Do hosted holidays move hotel every day?
No. They stay in one or two places. Crete Discovery uses two bases, and holidays such as Kraków Discovery use a single hotel.
Is the Spice host with the group all day?
The Spice host travels with the group throughout, but time is left open on the itineraries. They are there when you want company or help, and you can go off on your own when you do not.
Can two friends or a couple book a hosted holiday?
Yes. Many holidays sell double rooms marked must be for 2, so two people can book together. The holiday page shows the room choices for the holiday you are looking at.
Where can I compare operators fairly?
Our comparison articles set Spice Escapes beside named operators, and every claim about another operator comes from that operator's own website. They also say where another operator may suit you better.
