Maldives holidays for solo travellers: a hosted group, a small boat and the reef

2 October 2026 · 6 min read

The best way to do the Maldives on your own is with a small group and a host, so the reef, the boat and the dinner table come with company already in place. Spice Escapes runs a hosted Maldives holiday for people travelling solo, with a week on a small wooden boat, a whole day looking for whale sharks and three quiet nights on a local island at the end, and the host and the group take care of the part a solo traveller usually worries about most.

The Maldives has a reputation as a honeymoon place, all overwater villas and couples at candlelit tables. That picture puts off a lot of people who would love the water but do not fancy being the only person on a resort island eating alone. A group holiday changes the arithmetic. You arrive with people who booked for the same reasons you did, most of them on their own, and a host who knows everyone's name before the first snorkel. If you are new to this, our page for first-time solo travellers has more for anyone doing this for the first time.

The Maldives with a boat full of company

Maldives Wildlife Cruise & Beach Chillout is 12 nights, hosted by Jonathan Banks, from £4,199. It departs 27 Nov 2027 – 9 Dec 2027, and places left: 2 places left.

You fly overnight from the UK and are met at Malé airport by the tour leader, then taken straight to MV Felicity in time for lunch on board. Felicity is a wooden boat with seven cabins that takes twelve guests at most, so the group fills it and nobody else is there. There is a salon with a bar, an outside deck where meals are served, and large sundecks for the hours between swims.

The first afternoon is a gentle start at the southern tip of South Malé Atoll. Before anyone goes in, the tour leader gives a safety briefing on snorkelling responsibly, helps with equipment and watches how everyone gets on in the water. In the water they act as your spotter, and in the evening there is a talk on the reefs and what lives on them.

From there the boat heads to South Ari Atoll. You visit the local island of Dhangethi for a taste of Maldivian food and island life, snorkel the seagrass beds and finish with hedikaa, the traditional evening tea, on the beach. The next day is given over entirely to whale sharks off Dhigurah. Nobody can promise them. You might see two or three in half an hour or none at all, and the searching together from the deck is half the fun. That evening there is a talk on the work of the Manta Trust.

Along the way there are coral nursery visits and island clean-ups, then the last three nights are on Fulhadhoo at Island Luxury Boutique Hotel, with nothing scheduled. Those days are for reading, swimming and long lunches with whoever you have taken to.

What travelling solo to the Maldives in a group actually feels like

On your own, the Maldives can be a lonely sort of beautiful, with every meal a table for one. On a hosted holiday the people around you are your group. You eat together on the deck, you compare what you saw on the reef, and by the second evening there are running jokes.

The host is there to make the joining-in easy. They make introductions on the first day and keep an eye out for anyone sitting at the edge. It is about friendship and good company. Most people come back with a few phone numbers and a plan to travel together again.

Every Spice Escapes holiday carries a cost for a room or cabin to yourself. The single supplement page explains how that works and what your choices are, and the team will tell you the cabin options on Felicity when you ask.

Other far-off and warm-water holidays with a group

If the timing is wrong for the Maldives, these hosted holidays share some of its pull: wildlife, warm sea or a long way from a grey British winter.

South Africa, with penguins and a game drive

South Africa Discovery is 10 nights, departing 29 Mar 2027 – 8 Apr 2027, from £3,499, hosted by Sue Giddings. Places left: 9 places left. Your local host meets you at arrivals in Cape Town and stays for the whole trip. One day takes in Chapman's Peak Drive, Cape Point and the penguins at Boulders Beach, there is a day in the Franschhoek winelands, and there is an overnight at a private game reserve with a sunrise game drive.

Croatia, with coves and a chance of dolphins

Croatian Chillout is 7 nights on the island of Lošinj, departing 1 May 2027 – 8 May 2027, from £869, hosted by Jackie Whyte. Places left: 15 places left. You stay half board at Hotel Punta, and there is a boat day round the archipelago with swimming in quiet coves, snorkelling and a chance of the bottlenose dolphins these waters are known for. It is much closer to home, and a good first taste of swimming and snorkelling with a group.

Fuerteventura, for winter sun and a long beach

All Inclusive Fuerteventura Winter Sun & Fun is 7 nights, departing 30 Jan 2027 – 6 Feb 2027, from £1,199, hosted by Steve Dell. Places left: 3 places left. The hotel is adults only, all meals and drinks are included, and the sea-view rooms look over Jandía Beach. Our guide to winter sun without breaking the bank has more ideas.

Questions people ask

Is the Maldives a good place to go on your own?

It can be, but it is far easier with a group. Resort islands are built around couples, so a solo traveller often ends up eating alone. On a hosted boat holiday you share the deck, the meals and the reef with the same small group all week.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to snorkel?

You need to be comfortable in the water, but you do not need to be an expert. The tour leader gives a safety briefing, helps with equipment and watches how everyone copes on the first snorkel. They also act as a spotter in the water, pointing out marine life you might miss.

Will I be the only person travelling alone?

Almost certainly not, because most people on our holidays book on their own. The host makes introductions from the first day and keeps an eye on anyone who is quieter. It is about friendship and company.

What does a cabin or room to myself cost?

Every holiday carries a single supplement or a cost for a room to yourself, and it varies by holiday. The boat has a mix of twin and double cabins, so the team can explain exactly what is available when you ask. Our single supplement page sets out how it works.

How long is the flight, and will I be flying alone?

The flight out is an overnight one from the UK, arriving in the Maldives the next morning. The tour leader meets the group at Malé airport and takes everyone to the boat together. If you have not flown long-haul on your own before, the team can talk you through it before you book.

Talk to us about the Maldives

Places on Felicity are limited by the size of the boat, so if the Maldives is the one, it is worth asking sooner rather than later. Tell us what you are hoping for and we will tell you honestly whether this holiday suits you or another would suit you better. Ask for Rob Thompson, who owns Spice Escapes and hosts holidays himself, or anyone on the team. Get in touch and we will take it from there.
